Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks to Star in Kevin Smith’s Next Film
It appears that Kevin Smith’s next movie is almost ready to start production, and we’ve finally received word on who the two major stars will be for his sex comedy Zack & Miri Make a Porno. Zack and Miri will be played by none other than The 40-Year-Old Virgin alumni Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks. My mind has just officially been blown.
The thing I find weird about this announcement is that Judd Apatow’s career has been mirroring Kevin Smith’s in a lot of ways so far; they both make R-rated comedies, and they both like to cast their friends in their movies. The main difference, however, is that Apatow’s movies have been making a lot more money! Doesn’t it seem like Smith is trying to ride Apatow’s coattails a bit here? No matter, I’ll watch Seth Rogen in just about anything at this point, and at least Smith is stepping out beyond his usual buddies (although I’m sure Jason Mewes will make an appearance in the flick too). The disappointing thing is, I was a lot more interested in Smith’s other upcoming movie, the horror film Red State. Instead it looks like they’re going with the easy sell by making the crass comedy first. Understandable I suppose. Will it turn out to be just another Clerks with a different cast? Zack & Miri Make a Porno starts shooting this January in Pittsburgh.

i agree this seems a little obviously like a coattail grab.
but Rogen does have a “new Jason Lee” thing about him to a lot of people. I guess Smith sees someone he can spout his dialogue out of .
Posted by Goon on November 16th, 2007I know you guys have been trying to figure out what celebs you all sound/look like. Well I don’t know about looks but your Buddy Greg is a dead voice match for Seth Rogen. I’ve always thought this. Play some audio on your next podcast and you’ll see I’m right. Could just be a racist American generalizing about Canadians though, so don’t hold it against me if you disagree.
Posted by Ian on November 16th, 2007If you read Smith’s blog, he’s talked about why Red State is on hold and Porno is a go. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with him branching out to new actors and doing first what he does best. Red State is down the pike, he’s just having some issues with it.
