Friday the 13th Remake Gets a New Director

It’s been a while since we heard anything about the Friday the 13th remake coming from Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes production company. You may remember that it was originally slated for release on October 13th of last year, but got held up due to some rights issues. At the time Jonathan Liebesman (Darkness Falls) had signed on to direct, and we had heard that both Gary Busey and Corey Feldman would make appearances in the film. Now it looks like the remake is finally back on track, with a new director in negotiations. Unfortunately, it’s Marcus Nispel (Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, Pathfinder) not someone I hold in a particularly high regard, although he may turn out to be an improvement on Liebesman. Production is expected to begin this winter, possibly with a release date of mid-2008 in mind. Don’t look now, but there is a Friday the 13th in June 2008… I’m just sayin’ is all. What do you think, is this a remake you want to see, and is Nispel the man to do it?

  1. I think I would actually see this. The first Friday is pretty good, but is not really a Jason Voorhees movie (more about his mom than him), so a re-envisioning of how Jason was driven to kill might be cool with Jason as a child (is he even human?). Kind of like the re-make of Halloween, but maybe not as close to the original as Rob Zombie made his. Remakes remakes remakes though… ugh. Luckily “The Mist” looks somewhat cool and original… I guess.

  2. Funny you should mention that, I was just reading over on The Hollywood Reporter that they’re apparently changing it for the remake so that the first movie involves Jason with the hockey mask and everything right from the get go.

“While Jason made only a brief appearance in the final frames of the first movie in 1980 and didn’t even don his famous mask until the third movie, the new movie will focus on Jason — who will wear the mask and kill — and keep the famous setting of Crystal Lake.”

  3. Well I would see a Friday the 13th remake, but saying that they are doing a remake of the original and changing the villain of the movie is quite significant. I feel like the people up to this don’t have any respect for the original movie. Why don’t they just call it a remake Friday the 13th part 2. Then that way any re-envisioning would be valid. Personally, if they did a remake of the Jason movies, Jason Lives would be a lot of fun.

I don’t know if Nispel has the right stuff to direct this film. For me, the friday the 13th franchise has diminished completely in seriousness. I want to see a hilarious over-the-top Jason movie. I don’t think he’ll give us that even though the original took itself seriously.

  4. I suppose it’s more of a “reboot” than a remake, but I see your point. They’re just trying to introduce the franchise to a new audience, and a lot of people would be pretty confused if they went in to see Friday the 13th and there wasn’t a guy with a hockey mask killing people.

  5. I don’t think the hockey mask is as scary as the William Shatner mask from Halloween. But I can’t remember ever seeing a Friday the 13th film from beginning to end…

  6. i think a remake would be cool.but i think rob zombie should direct all the remakes. he did a fantastic job on the halloween remake.

  7. I’ve only just found out about the reimagining of friday the 13th, and i hope that the reimagined version can live up to the original. They can only re-imagin the original trillogy, not all 11 films.
Personaly i didnt like the original friday the 13th, i prefere Jason to his Mother any day, he’s jus so amusing when he kill’s.

I did wonder if they would make a new friday the 13th ever since the re-imagining of halloween. Horror films today lack the imagination they had in the past, i meen most of the movies that have been made over the past few years are for kid’s. I say that the original story (with Jason not his Mother) together with modern day FX would be great. Imagine a horror movie with Jason Voorhees and the FX from the Saw franchise, Brilliant, and i didn’t like the saw movies.

Jason is a movie legend, but i don’t see anyone mention anything about part V a new beggining, in any forum anywhere. The killer isnt Jason, he’s a copy cat. That was another one i did’nt like that much, don’t get me wrong, i wouldnt be writing this if i didn’t like Friday the 13th.

I want to see more re-makes/re-imagining’s of old classics. Because lets just face it, they can only be improved on, not replaced, after all clasics are clasic for a reason.

  8. i am a huge fan of the original 8 films, the other ones do not count. i am so hyped to see this new movie simply because its been too damn long for one of these not to come out. i own all these movies so i have been digging on them for the past year. i think that the original has its strong points but the second one was better. the third, fourth, sixth, and seventh are the best parts in the series. with todays fx this could be the best yet. fingers crossed

  9. I hope this is as awesome as the texas chainsaw movies and zombie’s halloween … i really dig how dark and out of control those movies are…if they could capture that same idea with this…it will be awesome.
