The Pixar Story Documentary and Companion Book To Infinity and Beyond!

Here’s something I had been meaning to post about, but it seems that Peter over at /Film has beaten me to the punch. There’s a new book out this month called To Infinity and Beyond! The Story of Pixar Animation Studios, and it looks like something that would make just about any true blue Pixar fan wet themselves. Written by Karen Paik, it compiles extensive interviews into a history of the company that now dominates the world of computer animation, and includes concept art, photos and lots of other goodies. The release date was supposedly November 1st, but I have yet to see this in any bookstores near me, so I’m not sure how easy it will be to track down a copy.

The other thing worth mentioning is that this book is a companion of sorts to the Leslie Iwerks documentary The Pixar Story. I’ve been hearing good things about this little flick, although I’m a bit unsure why it has only been playing at a handful of festivals and indie screenings so far. I think there’s a great story to tell about how a small studio overcame so many hurdles (both technical, financial and otherwise) to become a seemingly invincible force within the industry. On the other hand, I could also see it having a few too many testimonials from smug insiders talking about how “story is king”. Regardless, all signs indicate that it is a movie that many, many people will want to see… hopefully it will land a distributor and find its way out to the masses soon enough.
