Rob Zombie to Direct C.H.U.D. Remake
Despite Rob Zombie’s past comment that remakes are “the worst thing that any filmmaker can do”, it seems that he is having no qualms at all about building a career on them. There is news across the web today that Zombie has signed on to direct a remake of C.H.U.D. (the movie, not the website). This campy 80’s flick featured deformed monsters living in New York City sewers who emerged above ground to prey on innocent victims (mainly homeless people). The name is an acronym for Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers, and the story also involved a government conspiracy to cover up nuclear waste that had been dumped beneath the streets.
So is Zombie just exposing himself as a hypocrite here by taking on another classic? Well, C.H.U.D. is certainly not as respected as John Carpenter’s Halloween, and although it has a cult following, it’s probably something that could benefit from a re-imagining of sorts. Knowing Zombie, it’s going to be loud, it’s going to be bloody, and it’s going to feature a lot of 70’s rock on the soundtrack. Who’s in?

It’s official. They’ll remake ANYTHING!?! Now I like C.H.U.D. as much as the next guy (Daniel Stern – Represent!) but add this one to the Idiocracy sized garbage heap of unnecessary remakes…
Posted by Kurt on November 8th, 2007Wonder why it is a remake? It’s not like it’s an original concept, or an iconic movie that they couldn’t just plagiarize.
Didn’t you guys say Rob Zombie was improving though? And that he should have done Hills have Eyes too, right? This sounds similar to Hills have Eyes.

Posted by Doug Nagy on November 8th, 2007Man I looooooved this movie, not so much the sequel C.H.U.D. 2 But the Chud starring that annoying wiseass-type kid from Head of the Class playing an annoying wise-ass kid.
TO tell you the truth, this is one of those movies that ISN’T a classic, although it IS beloved by many. Why not remake it? We are in an age where remakes are inevitable, better Rob Zombie remakes than, say, McG.
