Mike Newell to Direct Prince of Persia?

It’s been a while since we’ve heard any news about the upcoming movie adaptation of the Prince of Persia video game series. Last we heard, Jerry Bruckheimer was producing the project, and Disney was hoping to turn it into a major blockbuster franchise. Those things haven’t changed. Earlier in the year there were also reports that Bruckheimer’s partner in crime Michael Bay had signed on to direct, but thankfully, this is now proving to be unfounded.

The latest scoop indicates that Mike Newell is the director currently being sought for this project, and that he and Disney are currently in negotiation. Newell directed the 4th Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which was the weakest of the bunch in my opinion. That said, he still seems like a good fit for the project, and given his background in romantic comedies (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Mona Lisa Smile) he should be able to handle the love story between the Prince and Princess Farah, the kidnapped daughter of the Maharajah. I really think this movie is heading in the right direction, and may yet shake the bad reputation that video game adaptations have earned over the years. What do you think, is Newell the right man for the job?
