Moby Gives Songs Away For Free to Indie Filmmakers

If I’m not mistaken, Moby’s album Play has been licensed out for use in TV commercials and movies more than any other music release ever. All 18 songs from the album have been used at some point, which is a pretty amazing achievement. Of course, if you know Moby’s music, you know that it is atmospheric and lends itself extremely well to cinema and all kinds of different moods and settings. Now it seems that Moby (being the rich guy he is, obviously) has decided to give back to the filmmaking community in a somewhat unique way. He has selected over 50 tracks that are now available for independent filmmakers to use with their work, absolutely free of charge. As long as the piece is not being used for profit, there is no catch. If a film receives distribution after the fact, his only request is that a small fee be donated to the Humane Society. What a swell guy! If you’re interested in seeing what is available, just head over to MobyGratis.com and sign up for an account. He is planning to add another 20 songs later in the month. Variety also reminds us that Moby recently composed the score for Richard Kelly’s upcoming film Southland Tales.
