Dragonlance Animated: Dragons of Autumn Twilight Trailer and Release Date

Ever since the announcement was made about an animated Dragonlance movie, I’ve been extremely curious to get at least a taste of what the final product might be like. I loved reading these books when I was younger, and had always hoped I would get to see them on the big screen one day. Unfortunately, the decision to go animated was a strange one, and to be honest, a little disappointing. Comparing Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies to Ralph Bakshi’s animated version offers proof enough that live action should have been the ideal medium. On the other hand, with a solid voice cast that includes Kiefer Sutherland, Lucy Lawless, and Michael Rosenbaum, I didn’t want to write this off completely.

Well, after getting a look at the first rough trailer for this thing, I’m not feeling overly confident. In particular, the integration of CG elements with traditional animation seems downright terrible, and it’s been confirmed that the flick is rated PG-13, so it’s obviously pretty tame. According to DVD Active, it will be released direct to DVD on January 15th, which only gives them a couple more months to polish it. I will probably watch it just because I love the story, but we can only hope that a crappy animated version is the pre-requisite first step to getting a proper live action adaptation in development instead.

  1. Yea, I want this regardless, for the nostalgia factor alone….

Now, I’m off to pop in my Dungeons & Dragons: The Complete Animated Series DVDs… :)

  2. I’m not familiar with these books aside from the logo, which I know I’ve seen from time to time, and the trailer did absolutely nothing for me.

  3. Just actually watched the trailer (was at work before)…feels like a real throwback to the original “Heavy Metal” animation style. I actually like it considering the books were published in about the same time period. Wonder if that is intentional?

And they got Don LaFontaine to do voice over. Even better.

  4. Def should be more epic along the lines of LOTR movies
