Wal-Mart’s $100 HD-DVD Player
Still not sold on high definition technology, even after my insistence that it’s actually worth the jump? Yeah, I know, price is the one issue that I really can’t argue with, but Wal-Mart’s about to make HD-DVD a lot more affordable. As of this morning, select locations are selling the Toshiba HD-A2 player for $98.87. That’s right, an HD-DVD player for under $100! This is insane. I can only imagine these things are going to fly off store shelves, and should help boost HD-DVD numbers considering that the cheapest Blu-ray player is still the PS3 at $399. The only catch with this player is that it apparently does not support 1080p. Still, this is even cheaper than the Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on! Head over to your local store now and see if you’re one of the lucky ones who can cash in on this sweet deal.

Well this makes sense. How does the saying go? “Give ‘me the razor and sell ‘em the razor blades.” If everybody buys one of these cheaper players they think they’ll be saving money but the cost of your average HD-DVD hasn’t gone down so in the long run this is a smart move from a business standpoint.
Posted by Ian on November 2nd, 2007Wow, what a deal and to think this player cost around $499 at the start of the year,Ouch! Plus u can get some free HD-DVDs with the player, what a bargain.
Posted by Nemesis on November 2nd, 2007If u hunt around on-line u can pick up quite a few older HD-DVD titles quite cheap & some of the new titles cost roughly the same as the DVD release. Good time 2 upgrade.
I’m tempted to buy one…and i don’t even own an HD TV
Posted by mike on November 2nd, 2007OMG, thanks for posting this Sean, I just bought this exact hd-dvd player at Circuit City for $200 and I thought that was a damn good bargain since it $400 earlier this year. And yes, this is an excellent hd-dvd player and the upscaling for SD-DVD is very good. If you get this player now, you can get 5 free HD-DVDs along with your purchase. Being an early adopter of HDTV, I don’t have hdmi and only have up to 1080i, so this player is perfect for us that have gotten screwed over, lol.

Posted by Primal on November 2nd, 2007I also wanted to mention that when you watch High-Def movies in either blu-ray or hd-dvd on a hd-capable tv, the difference between 1080i and 1080p isn’t noticable to our eyes at all.
Posted by Primal on November 2nd, 2007Grrr. Too bad I boycott Walmart. Otherwise I’d snap one up for sure.
