Heroes: Origins Spin-Off Put On Hold

At a time when just about every popular show on TV has either spawned a spin-off or is currently contemplating one (yes, even The Office, believe it or not), the folks over at NBC have curiously decided to put the brakes on their upcoming Heroes spin-off entitled Heroes: Origins. It was originally planned to be a 6-episode mini-series that would air at the end of the season once Heroes was on hiatus. A number of high profile writers and directors had signed on to be involved including Eli Roth, Kevin Smith and Michael Dougherty.

Personally I’m a bit mystified by the move. The main reason given was the possibility of a writer’s strike, but this would seem like a minor concern given that there are only 6 episodes involved. Earlier in the year NBC was pretty gung-ho about maintaining the interesting of Heroes fans during the downtime. Could this actually be because the second season of Heroes is struggling and they don’t want to water it down further? I can’t speak for the ratings, but I know a lot of people aren’t too interested in the direction the show has taken. If you ask me, Heroes: Origins was starting to look a lot more interesting than the main series. Anyway, for now it’s on hold, although they say that the idea could still be revived next season. Time will tell.
