Harvey Keitel to Play Jerry Springer in Stage Musical

One great actor we haven’t seen on screen all that much lately is Harvey Keitel. He’ll be reprising his role as Sadusky in National Treasure: Book of Secrets, but aside from that, he’s not doing much high-profile stuff at the moment. Perhaps it’s time Tarantino threw him another bone, because now it seems he is being forced to take on some rather odd gigs. In particular, Keitel will be starring in a musical in January called Jerry Springer — The Opera in Concert. Keitel’s role? Why, none other than the lead role as Jerry Springer himself!

Keitel has been on Broadway before, in both Hurlyburly and Death of a Salesman, although somehow I have a hard time imagining the guy singing. For me, the stranger part is the subject material. An opera about Jerry Springer? I have to admit, I always wanted to see his movie Ringmaster but never got around it. I’m told this is a good thing. The musical’s director Jason Moore was nominated for a Tony for Avenue Q, and will be turning his attention to Shrek: The Musical next. Well, I guess it’s a living, right? Jerry Springer — The Opera in Concert will be presented at Carnegie Hall on Jan. 29th and 30th, 2008.
