George A. Romero’s Knightriders To Get Dubious Sequel
Contrary to popular belief, George A. Romero hasn’t built his filmmaking career exclusively on horror movies. After all, there’s at least one movie he did that had nothing to do with zombies! Back in 1981 he wrote and directed a movie called Knightriders. This was in no way related to the TV show Knight Rider or David Hasselhoff; in actuality it was about jousting knights who rode motorcycles, sort of a modern retelling of King Arthur and Camelot. It wasn’t so well-received, although I have no idea why… you have to admit, it sounds amazing! Believe it or not, this cult classic even starred Ed Harris.
Although I had never heard of the movie previously, someone out there has… and now they’ve decided that Knightriders is in dire need of a sequel. The folks at Taurus Entertainment have greenlit Knightriders 2 with an exorbitant budget of $1 to $3 million! While in theory this sounds like great news for fans of b-movies, I am a bit hesitant to get excited about this sequel, and here’s why. The folks at Taurus Entertainment are the same people behind Day of the Dead 2: Contagium and Creepshow III, both of which were horrible, unofficial sequels to Romero films. These people keep cannibalizing Romero’s back catalog and profiting from his past successes, but the actual movies are the equivalent of bad fan films. I’m not sure if Romero sees money from any of these deals, but either way, it seems shady. Without Romero involved, I have no interest in this movie. On the bright side, at least I have Taurus Entertainment to thank for introducing me to the original film, which I am now going to make a goal of tracking down on DVD!
