Silent Hill To Get Not One But Two Sequels
Out of all the video game movies that have stolen our time and money, I think the one that disappointed me the most was Silent Hill. This was a movie that seemed to have great potential: it was based on a brilliant video game franchise, and featured a solid writer/director team in Roger Avary and Christophe Gans. In the end, their adherence to the video game was probably the film’s major downfall (you can read my full review here). Despite the movie’s critical failure, it still earned enough money to spawn a sequel… or two, as the case may be. Roger Avary recently spoke on the “black carpet” at the Spike TV Scream Awards and revealed that Sony has already decided they will be turning the movie franchise into a trilogy. However, it’s looking like Christophe Gans will not return to direct the next installment, which means that Avary won’t be returning to write the second flick either (not sure if that is based on his principles or his contract). I suppose it can’t get much worse, so maybe some new blood will help elevate the next movie to the level of quality that it deserves to be. I do have my doubts, however. Did anyone out there like the original? Are you excited about a possible trilogy?

The original was pretty shitty but I did like some of the visuals and, particularly, the siren and how it was immediately followed by the dark – it was a great and super eerie combination and really, the only thing that I really liked about the first movie.
Posted by Marina on October 24th, 2007Every time someone bashes Silent Hill I feel very confused. I thought the first Silent Hill film was good and I really don’t understand why nobody else liked it. It’s not my favorite movie or anything, but when people say they didn’t like it (especially those who like the games or other films of the same genre), I just can’t wrap my mind around why. Even after reading your review, Sean, I’m still sort of baffled. This is not me trying to say that anyone is wrong in their opinion, because I know preferences differ from person to person, but I guess it’s kind of like when I tell people that I don’t like Blade Runner and they jump all over me. I have an unstoppable curiosity and fall into a state of confusion when people badmouth Silent Hill.
I’m not dying for sequels, especially if Avery’s not involved, but I’ll most likely see them if and when they are released.
