Warner Brothers Still Hates Women: Standalone Wonder Woman Movie Not Happening?

It seems this whole Jeff Robinov/Warner Brothers female lead fiasco just refuses to die, and I have to admit I’m getting a bit tired of hearing about it. But at the risk of adding to the hysteria and stretching this out even further, allow me to bring an update on the situation. As you may have heard by now, Warner Brothers tried to ignore the bad press they were getting, but eventually had to publicly deny that Robinov made any statements about movies with female lead characters. They tried to reassure the media that they will not, and had no intention of, instituting any such policies regarding movies they put into production. No one seems to believe it, but as far as I’m concerned, that’s where the story ends because now it’s just one person’s word against another, and we have no way of knowing who’s right.

The only way to get to the truth of it all will be to keep an eye on the movies that Warner Brothers actually puts out in the next year or two. Actions speak louder than words, and if you look at their line-up of films for the next little while… surprise, surprise, there aren’t any noticeable projects with female leads — with the exception of Wonder Woman, that is. Now the interesting thing is that Nikki Finke, the blogger who first broke the story over at her site Deadline Hollywood, claims to have heard through the grapevine that a standalone Wonder Woman movie is no longer happening, and instead she will be demoted to just one of the characters in the upcoming Justice League film. She claims it could happen after JL, but only “as a spin-off of Justice League, about four superheroes including Wonder Woman”. Once again, I’d recommend taking this with a grain of salt, but assuming it were true, would you be at all surprised? Do you think Wonder Woman deserves her own movie? Would it be successful?

  1. I’d rather see a Wonder Woman Movie than a Justice League Movie.

  2. Given the troubled road the project has traveled down over the past few years, the decision to shelve Wonder Woman seems more like a smart business decision than misogyny. All this bullshit about JLA and Wonder Woman and comic book movies in general is tiresome and takes focus away from greater issues.

Wait, did I just write that on a film blog? :-)

  3. I think in theory the Wonder Woman movie would be better than a JLA movie. But the reality is that casting the WW part is a hard job, both in finding a match and especially finding a match that can draw money.

  4. While I may not be a fan of Batman, Superman, Daredevil, and some other comic book characters, I have read good stories involving each of them. in the case of Wonder Woman, I can’t think of a single time when I’ve ever really thought that one of her comic stories was particularly good. I’ll see a Wonder Woman movie if it happens, but I really wouldn’t care if it never did. I’d rather not see a JLA movie either, though. WB should just put their time, money, and effort into making sure that the next Superman movie doesn’t eat quite as many balls as the last one.

  5. I really enjoyed the title of this article.

    “Warner Brothers still hates women.”

    That’s good comedy.

  6. i wouldnt see it, it’s not intresting and seeing the trouble to bring the moive out, i dont see it working.
