Exactly how much you need to know varies wildly from person to person and movie to movie. I do agree that it's sometimes a more "pure" experience if you go into a movie knowing nothing about it. On the other hand, none of us live in a vacuum, and I think you can sometimes get more out of a movie if you know a little bit beforehand. (Again, it depends on the movie though.)
