Julie Taymor Trying to Get Spider-Man Musical Off The Ground

So you’ve heard about the Batman musical based on Tim Burton’s movies that never saw the light of day, but how will the world react to a musical based on a different superhero? Say… Spider-Man? It’s true, Across The Universe director Julie Taymor has been working to bring this project to Broadway for a few years now, and despite a number of setbacks, it seems pretty close to becoming a reality. The only problem? They can’t seem to find a New York City playhouse that’s interested.

Taymor describes it as a “real rock-and-roll musical”, with all the music and lyrics being written by U2’s Bono and The Edge. Those are some pretty high-profile names, so you’d think that someone would be willing to take a risk on the thing. Then again, maybe they saw how much fanboys hated the musical bits of Spider-Man 3 and thought better of it. A reading of the Spider-Man musical took place in New York this past July, but it currently sits in limbo. Taymor remains confident, however. “We just have to find where we’re going to do it – even if we have to do it in a tent, which we’re looking into – and when. It’ll at least be a year away.” Is this something you’d see?

  1. YEah! I’d see this TWICE on opening day!

The Spider-Man origin story is a classic teenage story, with lots of great moments. And Spider-Man onstage could be a great swashbuckling hero, doing wise-cracks and parkour flips.

Depends on the songs, I guess, but it could certainly be as fun as “grease” if they played up the 1960s teenage Stan Lee vibe.
