Knight Rider Showdown Imminent: New TV Series Will Compete With Feature Film

A couple of weeks ago there was an announcement that NBC had hired Doug Liman to create a new Knight Rider TV series. When I heard about this I was a bit surprised because I was under the impression that the original series creator Glen A. Larson had been busy setting up a Knight Rider feature film for the past few years. Did this mean that the Knight Rider movie was now officially dead? Nope. It turns out that it’s not dead at all, and in fact, there’s a little bit of dirty pool going on here, with a lot of people accusing Universal and NBC of trying to sabotage the film project. Larson wants people to know that the movie is still happening, and that his vision is the one that serious Knight Rider fans should care about. Whether or not NBC actually intends on following through with their own Knight Rider re-invention is anyone’s guess, but it’s entirely possible that they’re just trying to steal the spotlight from Larson (who owns the theatrical rights to Knight Rider, though not the TV rights).

Larson recently recorded a video for KnightCon 2007 explaining that the movie is in development and that “like a mighty phoenix, K.I.T.T. will rise from the ashes to fight the forces of evil once more”. Amen to that brother. Wait a minute… there’s a convention for Knight Rider fans? I can’t say I’m waiting on the edge of my seat for either project, but I guess I am rooting for Larson if only because the guy’s been working on this for years and he doesn’t have much else going on right now (aside from some consulting on the new Battlestar Galactica series). What would you rather see, Michael Knight on the big screen, or back on the small screen again?
