Eli Roth to Direct an Episode of Heroes: Origins
With the season premiere of NBC’s Heroes airing tonight, I figured it’s a good time to talk about some of the news regarding their upcoming spin-off series Heroes: Origins, which will follow immediately after the second season of Heroes sometime next spring. They’ve been successful at casting big name actors for some smaller roles in the show that cater to their geek audience, and now they’ve taken this theory forward with the writers and directors they are bringing on board for the Origins series as well.
It was previously announced that Kevin Smith will direct an episode, and we also recently heard that Quentin Tarantino turned down a similar offer (Tarantino: “I haven’t even seen the f***ing show. What the f*** is Heroes?”). Apparently Tarantino’s buddy Eli Roth also got a call and accepted an offer to write and direct, while Superman Returns/X2 co-writer Michael Dougherty will pen one of the episodes too. Since Origins will consist of self-contained prequels focusing on specific characters, I think it’s great that they’re getting lots of different directors and (I hope) giving them a certain amount of creative freedom. I can only imagine what kind of twisted ideas Eli Roth has floating around in his head… maybe he’ll get to kill the cheerleader in some gruesome and creative ways? What do you think about Heroes: Origins? Will it water down the rest of the show? And are you excited for the second season of Heroes?

I have no interest in Heroes, I watched two episodes and it was the same melodramatic bullshit, starring the girl from Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and the fat guy from Hollow Man.
HOWEVER, that being said, I think this concept is a cool one. But I am confused as to wether these are origin stories the heroes on Heroes (who had some rather lame powers) or completely original ones? If it’s just origin stories for different original heroes, I think it has a ton of potential to be a cool show, albeit short-lived. I would check it out with enthusiasm then.
Posted by Henrik on September 24th, 2007Good question. I think this is supposed to be a way for them to introduce new heroes, but also focus on some of the existing ones. I would imagine they’ll want to stay away from a lot of the main characters though, so as not to spoil things going on in the main series.
Posted by Sean on September 24th, 2007It sounds like a launching pad for too many minor character spin-off shows.
Posted by mike on September 24th, 2007I watched the first eight or nine episodes of Heroes and it just couldn’t keep my interest. I’m surprised by this because I’m a huge comic book reader and trying to break into the business, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles. There were some neat things in the show, such as the origin of the villain, which I thought was really interesting, but overall I found it pretty bland.
Posted by Rian on September 24th, 2007I’m feeling the same way. I’ve been trying to get through the first season, and it’s going very slowly. Although I don’t hate the show, it just haven’t been caught up in it like some others. (Lost, Enterprise, American Chopper).

Posted by Henrik on September 24th, 2007i’m kind of lukewarm about Heroes as well. i dont think its a bad show by any means, and will probably watch it on TV this season, but I dont get why its become so popular. some of the characters are flat out lame – its really Hiro and his friend that carry the show. The first season started slow, then hit an admittedly great stride, but then petered out at the end with a finale that was very unsatisfying, not delivering what it promised.
I really am intrigued to see how it can carry itself through future seasons. I am cynical that it will manage to hold its fanbase.
