Denzel Washington and Tony Scott to Remake The Taking of Pelham One Two Three
“Well it’s The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, and if you want a doo doo rhyme then come see me.” Yes, it’s a movie that has been referenced quite frequently in pop culture, and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three has the honour of being one of the many movies from which Quentin Tarantino has “borrowed” ideas from (the colour codenames for his criminals in Reservoir Dogs). It stars Walter Matthau as a detective trying to stop four armed men who have hijacked a New York City subway train. Now it looks like the 1974 flick is due for a remake courtesy of director Tony Scott and his pal Denzel Washington. David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Stir of Echoes, Spider-Man) has been hired to pen the screenplay. While I could sit here and harp on why this remake is unnecessary and it will never top the original, I have to admit that this is a great vehicle for Scott and Washington and I am kind of excited to see how they put it together. The question remains, however… what’s up with Tony Scott’s remake of The Warriors? It was supposed to be out years ago and since then I haven’t heard a peep.

I’ve never even heard of this movie before, so I’m not immediately against there being a remake. As far as Tony Scott is concerned, I enjoyed Deja Vu (moreso for the writing than the direction), but aside from that have honestly never been a big fan of his. And Denzel Washington? I just don’t like him that much. I swear that you could take his performance in just about any movie and exchange it with any of his other performances and it would be almost impossible to tell the difference between them. He’s always the same character in my eyes, just in different films/situations. I don’t hate the guy, but he doesn’t get me excited for anything these days.
