Fright Night Remake On The Horizon

Well I guess it’s official… pretty much every horror movie released prior to 1990 is currently getting a remake or a sequel of some sort, and now you can add Tom Holland’s Fright Night to the ever-expanding list of remakes. Sony Screen Gems, the folks behind remakes of When A Stranger Calls and Rec, are currently seeking a writer to pen a new version of the 1985 flick. The strange thing is, it sounds like they’re only interested in re-using the Fright Night name, and nothing else. The original, you may recall, was about a teenaged boy who discovers that his neighbour is a vampire. Inside sources say that producer Scott Strauss (Breach, Training Day) wants the story to involve an amusement park in some way. Wha??? Man, if they’re going to do that, they might as well just remake Kiss Meets The Phantom of the Park instead. Here’s to hoping this boneheaded idea doesn’t get any further than the script stage.

  1. I never had much interest in seeing Fright Night, but knowing that there are people out there who loved it when they were younger, I was talked into watching it by a friend. The verdict? I hated it. There were plot holes all over the place and I found it to be all-around dumb. I’ve had similar experiences with such beloved-by-the-masses films as The Lost Boys and The Goonies. If I’d seen these films when I was younger I may have liked them, but seeing them for the first time in my twenties, I have no interest in or appreciation for them whatsoever. Hence, the only thing that could possibly make me interested in a remake/sequel of Fright Night is if it is absolutely nothing like the original. Lucky for me then, I suppose, that it sounds like this new version will fit the bill.

  2. Awesome. I wonder who’s going to play Evil?

  3. Wasn’t this done already? It’s called Disturbia. Teen spies on neighbor who is a serial killer (although not a vampire) and gets all of his friends in danger.

Why don’t they do a prequel in explaining how Jerry Dandridge and his sister became vampires.

  4. can’t wait, loved evil in the original ‘dinners’ in the oven’!!!! hope the remake is similar

  5. I’m not sure why they’re not making a prequel. In my eyes this movie is an instant classic. Whether people like or disliked it. Out of respect to the late Roddy McDowell, hopefully the new director will have some kind of a tribute to him. And have William Ragsdale and Chris Sarandon making a cameo appearance. If it was me making a plot for a remake. Go from the ending of the last movie. Cut the laugh out of Evil Ed and have Jerry’s little brother move into the same house. My choice would be Christian Bale as the new vampire. I’ve noticed he’s on a bit of a roll lately for movies. Have Charlie and Amy moving into the same house where Charlie grew up in. The new teenager would be Shia Lebeouf, think I spelled that right. If the people that are making this movie that are reading this. Gimme’ a shout for details.

Response to Lou, great minds think alike.

  6. well doing a remake of the 85 horror classic fright night willbe an hard act to follow due to the state
of the art computer effects these days and i takened
years of waiting and speculations for dan aykroyd
and harold ramis to get ghostbusters 3 going and
upto recently did a fourth chapter to the indianna jones movie saga well along with rambo and rocky balboa but the tricky feat is to get an actor
with roddy mcdowalls stature to play peter vincent
and it willbe tough to do the fright night remake
due to the successes of the saw trilogy among others
and are people prepared for another vampire flix like fright night to be remaked only time will tell.

  7. it is about time they made a remake of this movie. i hope things go as planned and they do it. man horror movies have lost its touch when it comes to classics. this movies use to keep me up at night and trust me i was up. they need to have more horro movies like this one fright night was the best…. whaT EVER HAPPENED TO THE COST I HOPE THEY MAKE A CAMEO…..

  8. i truly loved this movie, i remember my mum rented the video and let me watch it even tho i were only 9 or 10, i had numerous nightmares but thats part of the greatness of the movie, good shout for Bale, hope to here something soon.

  9. ANALYSIS
the original has special qualities to it…
no historical angle is taken with the production so we are asked to belive what we think is accurate…
the production methodologies are very tight and controlled…

always seems to have a hold on you watching it at whatever chapter…which indicates careful thought was put into the overall structure…

the climax was original and challenging…the music and atmosphere contained within the first 2/3 is high quality…clever that daylight scenes occur within dandridges residence…addds tension to the night scenes later in the movie…
sarandon is very effective as dandridge whose motives appear less occastrated than in say dracula 1992…
hense the plot threads are less predictable and we see more off an operatic style of movie particualy in the night club sequence which is extended in part and very effective to watch…
are we reminded that dandridge is actually playing a real vampire?
rather than a rich aritocrat who is more interested in the end game…

    IMPROVEMENTS FOR REMAKE
A carosel in a amusmement could add grim premise of some kind…could the remake have more adult overtones , more dialogue involving flashback from the original movie? hence the new movie connects onwards from the first one… and historical aspects ie dream showing dandrige dreaming about when he was a child before he was bitten and became a vampire alludes to whether the gods care or not?
should music be orchastrated to indicate movement or failings in a mans ability to father a family ?…
because of what he knows to be accurate and what he wishes would go away…
the nature of various types of vampires…
should dandridge be less forceful in his physical premise?
should he be more ghoulish in the remake? dream behavoir and real time behavoir are directed to show that they are not obvious to the audience…
thereby adding intrigue into the scale of the movie i.e dandrige playing in the desert as a child…playing with a cloak..dancing in front of a mirror?
these quality sequences could make the movie more attractive to an adult audience ref: historical and entertaining…

perhaps a disclaimer to indicate to the audience the movie makers views on whether vampires really exist?

action sequences could be shot like in a resident evil game/vampire hunter game?

could a cemetary feature more prodominetly? perhaps a glass coffin subplot research could give insight into the traditional tales of asssumed fables?

  10. as far as im concerned, its safe to let Sean William Scott play evil (minus the browse and muscles)
