Tron Sequel Gets Writers and Director
Here’s an interesting piece of news that I missed out on last week. Apparently there is a sequel to the Disney’s 1980’s geek classic Tron in the works, and the project has now officially gained some writers and a director. There has been talk about this for years, with the original Tron director Steven Lisberger trying to get it off the ground to no avail. A Tron 2.0 video game was released in 2003, but the big screen sequel seemed stalled indefinitely. Now we learn that Joseph Kosinski is in final negotiations to direct “the next chapter” of the Tron franchise, with Lisberger on board as a producer, and Lost writers Adam Horowitz and Eddie Kitsis penning the script.
The sequel, as it turns out, will also be called Tron (makes perfect sense, doesn’ t it?) and seems likely to be more of a remake with updated special effects and a modern internet backdrop. But who is this Joseph Kosinski guy? You may have heard his name also being attached to Bryan Singer’s upcoming Logan’s Run remake, but he has yet to direct a feature film. He is known for directing some innovative TV commercials; just check out this Nike promo and tell me you can’t envision him giving Tron a pretty kickass facelift. I have to say, I’d be completely on board for a new version of Tron, with one stipulation: Jay “Tron Guy” Maynard absolutely must have a cameo!
