Dark Horse Indie Preps Horror Comedy War Monkeys

It seems we may finally have found a worthy successor to Snakes on a Plane! Dark Horse Indie, the production company behind the upcoming Bruce Campbell movie My Name is Bruce, have reportedly greenlit a comedic horror flick called War Monkeys. The premise? A janitor gets trapped in an underground research facility with military-trained Rhesus monkeys. Ouch.

While on the surface this reminds me a little bit of the New Zealand film Black Sheep, it also sounds like the Grant Morrison comic book WE3 (incidentally, also being turned into a feature film) about a technologically-enhanced dog, cat and rabbit that escape from a military compound. Of course, where WE3 empathizes and identifies with the animals, this movie turns the cute little monkeys into creatures of terror. While I’m not entirely convinced that War Monkeys has what it takes to be a successful cult classic, the important thing is that the title of the film is both ridiculous and succinct. As long as they don’t change that, they’ve got it made! Cleve Nettles (A Yuletide Journey) will write the screenplay, while Mike Richardson (Hellboy, Mystery Men) is set to executive produce.
