HBO’s John From Cincinnati Cancelled
I can’t say I’m all that shocked, but it looks like the rumours of HBO cancelling John From Cincinnati are true. According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO has passed on a second season of the mystical surfing series, which means that the show’s final episode aired last Sunday. Series creator David Milch is supposedly moving on to develop other projects, although it remains to be seen if one will be a Deadwood made for TV movie. Personally, I only caught the pilot episode of John From Cincinnati and was never inspired to go back and continue watching the rest of the season. It was unique, I will certainly give it that, and you have to give HBO props for airing something like this. But at the same time, you can’t blame them for pulling the plug when audiences didn’t seem to be responding. There has also been no word on whether or not the new HBO half-hour comedy series Flight of the Conchords will get renewed for a second season. Sounds like HBO is currently having some troubles finding a new hit.

I caught episode 7 of John from Cincinnati and was very confused but intrigued. The next 2 nights I caught up with the episode by renting them on demand. I don’t watch network TV because it is all alike. This is an extremely creative show and I am disappointed it has been cancelled.
Posted by Tania on August 15th, 2007John from Cincinnati was the first show I actually scheduled my time not to miss. It is exactly the kind of art that TV has been missing. It is a show you really have to watch and stay tuned into. If you missed the first episode or any episode for that matter you were lost. Not a show that you can have on while balancing your check book, checking emails, micro-waving your preservative filled frozen dinner, etc. You actually had to pay attention, think, imagine and dream. This show has soul. Period! What a HUGE mistake for HBO to cancel something with real, deep cultural meaning. I guess having real surfers playing the part of surfers and portraying the So Cal surf culture with all it’s grittiness and funk rather than fake actors playing the part of shallow, soulless Hollywood posers was just too much for the less than limited attention span of the HBO executives. I must commend David Milch for his work and would hope he can show the same BALLS he used to create the show to shop the second season to another network. perhaps Showtime. I think I might have to cancel my HBO subscription! I feel very let down.
Posted by CP on August 22nd, 2007Hey David, Let me know if Showtime picks it up so I can pick up a Showtime subscription.
I am so upset that this show has been cancelled. Milch should market the series to another cable network. The HBO executives are kneeling to critics, not the viewers.
Posted by susan Wegener on August 22nd, 2007I watched and like the show as well. But let’s face it, HBO is a business and the show was bringing in 1-2 million viewers each week. Sounds like a lot, but it’s actually a very poor number. HBO made a business decision to cancel this show. It’s not that they don’t have balls, or that they didn’t believe in the show, it’s because the show was not profitable. It would be foolish to continue providing a product in which a vast majority of it’s customers reject. With that said, i did like the show and i was disapointed that it was canceled. However, i am not going tit here and say HBO sucks, or HBO should do this, etc.
Posted by Al on August 24th, 2007I will GREATLY miss “John”. It has been a long time since I really cared about a show.
Perhaps Mitch could write a book? I really want to find out how things went on for the group.
Is Kai preggers? Does Shawn move on with his career or become an apostle of John? Does Mitch gain clarity? I have many questions!!
Posted by Kat on August 30th, 2007not so long ago, lifetime didn’t pick up the option of a show called Desparate Housewives. I am sure that when the success of the show hit they were left kicking themselves, as I can only hope that hbo is doing now. JFC was an inspiring show, both mentally, spiritually and emotionally. We had JFC parties!! We have been let down so many times by shows that run a season or two and then get abrubtly cancelled. This is not the way to build a LOYAL FAN BASE! Let’s get it together and save this show. Let’s bombard HBO with letters and phone calls! I am willing if you are! let’s get on it!!
Posted by kathy on December 3rd, 2007Kathy, have you been to the hbo bb’s, there is a huge fan base and also HeyNielsen to give an opinion
