G.I. Joe Live Action Movie Finds a Director?

As someone who grew up in the 80’s, it’s pretty hard not to be excited about the prospects of seeing a G.I. Joe movie on the big screen. Despite the fact that it will likely bear most of the problems that the Transformers live action film had (admittedly, with a lot less reliance on CGI), something about it makes me think it could be a hell of a lot better than Michael Bay’s Transformers. (Maybe it’s just because I actually preferred the G.I. Joe cartoon to the Transformers.) We’ve heard previously that a G.I. Joe movie is indeed in the works, and there have been some pretty dubious claims made about the characters and villains slated to star in the flick.

Well now we can add to those dubious claims the rumour of a rather dubious director being named to helm the project. IGN is reporting that Stephen Sommers has signed on to be the man who ushers “A Real American Hero” into a new era. Sommers, as you may know, is the guy responsible for such schlockey action films as The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and Van Helsing. I gotta say, I really hope this turns out to be unfounded because I personally think Sommers is a lot less talented than Michael Bay even. In fact, the only thing that could make this possibility worse is if they decided to cast Brendan Fraser as Duke. Either way, it looks like this thing is going to be rushed into production (along with the Voltron live action film). What say you, Film Junkies? Will this project lay waste to another fond childhood memory?

Well, at least we still have these classic G.I. Joe PSA spoofs to help retain our sanity.

  1. I don’t really care about G.I. Joe, but I don’t think Stephen Sommers is as bad as you’re making him out to be.

Deep Rising is pretty kickass I think. To-the-point ‘aliens-meets-poseidon’-action with cool weaponry. Have you seen it? If not, then you should it’s a really good action movie.

I also like The Mummy Returns alot. The sheer amount of glossy visual effects constantly on screen, massive everything, I find really entertaining. Rachel Weisz is a good actress too. Another really good, fun actionmovie that I have found to deliver whenever I’ve seen it, which is like 4 times now.

I really liked Van Helsing when I saw it in the theatre, but I admit it’s not very strong on second viewing… Again though, can’t argue with the effects work. The action just seems pretty stale with alot of swinging about and such. Kate Beckinsale is no Rachel Weisz (nor Famke Janssen) either.

Definitely like Sommers more than Bay. I have a feeling his take on something like this will be less serious and more fun. And his action is better.

  2. So basically G.I Jane part 2? AWESOME!

  3. I think Michael Bay would have been better suited for a G.I. Joe movie than he was for Transformers, what with his military fetish and all.

As for Sommers, I don’t deny that he could bring a fun sense of adventure to the movie, but in general I don’t care much for his style (if you can call it that). I guess a lot depends on the script. I wonder if any truly big names would consider touching a G.I. Joe movie… after all, Spielberg and Bay are pretty huge in comparison to Stephen Sommers.

  4. One thing about Sommers though is that he writes his own scripts, so I don’t think you should expect anything different from what he’s been doing.

  5. I guess. For my money of the big 3, Voltron is the one I’m actually looking forward to. I mean robeasts and giant robot lions and that kickass castle. It’d be something to see. I don’t know what GI Joe would be like in the current political climate?
