John Woo’s Stranglehold Demo on Xbox Live
If you’re a fan of Hong Kong action flicks and you also enjoy playing video games, then odds are you’ve been closely following the development of Midway’s upcoming PC/Xbox 360/Playstation 3 title Stranglehold. The game is billed as an official sequel of sorts to John Woo’s classic Hard-Boiled, with Woo himself involved in the production to some extent, and Chow Yun-Fat lending his likeness to the game. I have to admit, most video games based on movie licenses tend to suck, and the current trend of directors slapping their name on video games just seems like a fad. That said, a demo for the Stranglehold has popped up on Xbox Live this week, and after trying it out, I have to say it’s pretty damn fun. They really captured the feel of a John Woo movie, and not just with the cinematics or the cool slo-mo effect, but also with the cluttered environments and large number of destructible objects that explode around you. They even have flying doves… need I say more? I can whole-heartedly recommend it if you’re a Woo fan. What I’m wondering is, will this lead to more movies getting “official” standalone video game sequels? Maybe. There’s a standalone Bourne game coming out sometime next year. Stranglehold hits stores on August 27th.

For those of you in a shopping mood, it should be noted that the PS3 version had a different release date – Sept 17th, which as of today has now been bumped to ?/?/2007. Also – the PS3 version will ship with a Blu-Ray version of Hard-Boiled right on the disc, but only in the US. And yes, I’m be making a run for the border on that one.
