I’ve taken enough fucking jokes towards my person when I have stated my favorite movies, and given the nature of this website (and the internet in general) I don’t think I want to publish them. Besides, they are pretty european.

I think you have a point… I did ask when I was going to see the list, because they talked about it several times. I’m not sure what I wrote is an insult though… I think that you want to find things about me to hate at this point, and seeing what I said, not as an answer but as an insult, is pretty unfair I think.
To be perfectly honest (I actually thought about this for awhile. Like 7 minutes!) I can’t think of anything that deserves to be no. 2 really. To satisfy you a bit, I will say that my favourite movie is Amadeus. But I can’t really figure out what’s 2, 3, 4, 5, let alone beyond that, which is pretty fucking arbitrary. I mean beyond 5 how do you decide the order? I know how the masses go crazy for lists and debate them and think about them and automatically consider the maker some sort of authority – as long as he has a recognizable outlet – but I don’t really like lists. I like conversation where you don’t really have to order things, rank things, debate wether one is more good than how good another thing was, etc…
Some of my favorite movies (just for you goon, you pretentious asshole. I pretty much hate you, for your emotional reaction to everything, and you’re unability to recognize anything except things that are dumbed down to children’s level like:

Why not talk about something relevant? I’m obviously not part of the ‘online film community’ and my opinion isn’t really relevant to this stuff, but since the hosts of this show thought their opinions were worth publishing, I didn’t think they should get off this easy.

Jay: A movie that people think is important and gave birth to the trend of ‘movies that make alot of movie’ is beyond subjective? I haven’t seen Jaws. I’m not going to buy it, and I don’t know anybody who owns it, but to say it’s beyond subjective because it gave birth to the trend of moneymaking american movies, is pretty weak. Not to mention a pathetic view of the art of moviemaking in general. Why isn’t Titanic on the top of your list? By your logic it gave birth to MEGAblockbusters and should be beyond anybodys subjectivity.

Why the fuck did you ask to see our lists then?? If you think talking about your favourite films is ‘pretentious’, then why the fuck do you visit this site/listen to our podcast? Make up your mind, either WANT to hear the lists or DON’T. You’ve been commenting on this site for a long time now and nobody has accused you of being pretentious for expressing your opinion. Do you do this often? Ask something of people, and then shoot them down for supplying it? That’s just strange.

Get off easy? We’ve all been working on our lists for the last two weeks and ended it by recording a three and a half hour podcast marathon just for people to listen to and enjoy. You make it seem as though we were trying to weasel out of this. What’s pathetic is you making these statements WITHOUT ACTUALLY HAVING SEEN THE FILM. Until then, it’s not even worth addressing.
Okay, so that’s three insults in one thread coming from someone who seems to listen to everything we do and visit all of our sites on a regular basis. I’m fine with people disagreeing, but are you emotionally unstable? Seriously.
I appreciate your support with everything we do, but offhand comments such as these go beyond just simple debate or disagreement. You’re insulting. And I don’t know why, when you make remarks like this, you don’t expect anything other then to be insulted back? Seriously.

Posted by Jay C. on August 7th, 2007I deserved that though… I don’t know if I’m necessarily emotionally unstable but I definitely didn’t really think those comments through.
Thing is, I thought you already had your lists ready some time ago, because you published the final top 20. So I was surprised nothing had been published from you, I don’t know if I wanted to say you were weaseling out, but I was kinda poking at it. I didn’t think it would be such a huge deal. So that’s that part.
As for the Jaws thing… If the movie is good, tell me about why it’s good. Don’t tell me it’s on the list because it made money and made people more focused on box office when releasing movies. That’s not a reason to like something, in my opinion that is.
Anyway, I deserved a little burning for what I wrote. I didn’t think it was that bad when I put it down, but it was. I’m going to blame youthful exuberance, but I do apologize still.
I’ll keep listening though. I still enjoy FilmJunk (sans Goon
).
Posted by Henrik on August 7th, 2007Well, my explanation of liking Jaws simply focused on it being the ‘first blockbuster’ because most people who would include it in their top ten already know the other reasons why it rules:
1. Quint. He’s a man’s man. His character is interesting because he seems cold and in it for the money, but as the film progresses, he sort of takes the chief under his wing. Little moments like when Brody knocks the tanks over and Quint says ‘next time you just ask me which rope to pull chief’.
2. Suspense. The way Spielberg shot the shark was ingenious. The use of the barrels to represent ‘Jaws’ was both creative and a great solution to the technical limitations of the time.
3. The music. John Williams score is as effective and has gone on to be as recognizable as the music in Psycho.
4. The performances. Richard Dreyfuss as Hooper…Roy Scheider as Chief Brody…the chemistry between these two is great.
Either way, these are just a few of the reasons why this film rules. But you haven’t seen it, so it doesn’t really matter.
As for our lists…the OFC only required our top 100 films in no particular order. These would then go on to create a ‘nominees’ list from which we would rate another top 100. The results of that would then create the final OFC list. As for our personal lists, we still had to put them in order, which took more work.

if you’re going to make such harsh comments to people Henrik, you best expect one in return, or for people to express that they are pissed off that you went there unnecessarily. you give it out but you can’t take it back. you think your opinions are beyond the pale, but others are pretentious for daring being expressed. you yell at jay for not explaining why Jaws is good, but you throw in offhand remarks about things being crap without any justification all the time, and get angry when we ask you to elaborate.

I don’t think you’re being completely fair though. I do get agitated and even pissed off at times when I get attacked personally (ie. “You’re an idiot.” or “Two words: Schindlers List”) for expressing an opinion. That wasn’t the case here though. I did go too far, and everything that has been said to me on this thread has been completely fair and justified.
Saying that I can’t take it, and that I get angry when asked to elaborate on my opinion simply isn’t true though. I’m completely civil when presenting opinions (for the most part anyway. Obviously didn’t do well here) even if they may seem controversial in and of themselves. That’s why I sometimes get bend out of shape because I don’t think I invite to some of the responses I get, mainly from you, but also from other random posters.

You’d have to quote me on calling you an idiot for a straight up opinion. But that second example is simply attacking an opinion, and doesnt deserve to be listed as a personal attack.
