The Online Film Community Releases Top 100 Movies List

A while back when we were contacted by Jonathan from Cinema Fusion about participating in a Top 100 Movies list, a sort of response to the AFI Top 100, we thought it was a great idea, not just to provide a new perspective on film, but also as a way of bringing together all of the online film critics, bloggers and writers out there as some sort of community. Together, volunteers from Cinema Fusion and Movie Patron pored over the nominations from over 50 contributors and came up with a combined list that is, surprisingly, not all that different from the AFI’s list. I guess no one can accuse the online community of having poor taste, although I am a little disappointed that this list wasn’t very radical or “progressive”. Check out the Top 20 below, or follow the link below to read the whole list. Were there any major surprises for you? Stay tuned for our individual Top 100 Lists.

  1. I like this list much more than the AFI list. The AFI list seemed to ignore modern cinema, and although I haven’t looked at it in a while I think the newest movie on their list was fron 1996. I love that this list includes Memento, the Matrix, and Fight Club.

  2. Oh and Eternal Sunshine making the top 25 makes me giddy.

  3. Citizen Kane and Casablanca in the top 5 makes me very, very happy!

  4. As much as I love 4,6,7,9 & 10 (and they are amoung my own personal favorites), I don’t think they belong amoungst the 20 best movies ever made.

  5. Seriously…. Alien, Empire Strikes Back, and Pulp Fiction ahead of Chinatown….? Ugh. Raiders ahead of Casablanca??? -_-.

  6. I wanted to check out the full list, but the link provided looks like it is out of date. Is it available anywhere else?

  7. Our good friends at Row Three still have the entire list here:

  8. I actually just watched Casablanca for the first time tonight. I thought that after a slow first hour or so it came together in the end very interestingly. I agree with its presence in the top 100, but I wonder why many critics always consider it be in the top 10 movies of all time. Is it enough that it was a sentimental romantic drama with Nazis, and had a screenwriter that gave Bogey some catchy lines?

  9. We are a Cape Town based Film review show hosted by two film fans! It’s not a basic film review…we basically just chat and argue about movies and give them a rating, we would love to work with you guys as we take pride in getting to know the film community, you could also embed our reviews with your reviews or banners? Basically tell us what you would be able to offer us and we can take it from there if you are keen.

We could supply weekly vids for you guys to embed, each of our inserts are about 3min long, we have interviewed local and INT celebs and have regular set visits on huge film productions, so all in all it would be pretty cool

I look forward to hearing from you guys
Check out the link below to check out the show, we are constantly working on up….
