Open Forum Friday: Who is Your Favourite Simpsons Character?
Since I’m sure we’ve all got Simpsons on the mind this weekend, I thought I’d get a discussion going about the 18 seasons of television that have come before this feature film. The Simpsons have been successful for a lot of reasons, but one of the biggest is the unlimited supply of colourful characters that occupy Springfield. There are so many memorable ones, it’s hard to pick a favourite — regardless, that’s exactly what I’m asking you to do! Homer and his family may be the stars of the show, but it’s the supporting cast that make it special. Who are the characters that stand out to you? Who are the ones you’re hoping to get the most screen time in The Simpsons Movie? I won’t even bother putting up a poll, so leave your answers in the comments below. Give us your thoughts here on Open Forum Friday!

Dingbat Charlie.

The Simpsons movie is better than I expected. Not great mind you, but decent. The crowd I was with was going apeshit the whole way through at everything good or bad. In a way the movie is an appropriate capsule of the entire series run, theres smart moments, moments that restore the heart the show has somewhat glossed over for years, and then theres the dregs of “homer gets attacked by animals and acts like a terrible person” moments that I tend to dread.
but at least theres an actual story in which some of the lamer gags make sense in and push the whole thing forward, which is much more than i can say for the current show, which tends to change its story at each commercial break, playing way to rushed to try to fit in more gags instead of just being relaxed and funny.
Overall about a 6/10, though the more I think about it I tend to appreciate it more, either out of respect for the shows history or just because its been so long since I had an overall positive experience with new Simpsons material. Glad I went regardless.
Posted by Goon on July 27th, 2007It would be somewhere in the lines of Duffman and Disco Stu…just colorful characters that pop out of nowhere every now and then but make it work.
Posted by Half.Baked on July 27th, 2007As for characters with more than one liners…Milhouse!
Lenny & Carl.
Posted by Greg on July 27th, 2007What?! Are you retarded? I might be drunk as I write this, but still, the best character through all time has to be homer!! how much (not so) inocent fun hasn’t this character given us over the years!!! Homer jay simpson rules!
Posted by birtles on July 27th, 2007Jin Jin the sensitive salesman.
Posted by Jay C. on July 27th, 2007Chief Wiggum makes me laugh the most.
Posted by TheSnowLeopard on July 28th, 2007Jay, I know you became sick of even older episodes because you said people you knew just kept quoting it all the time… did you check out the movie in spite of the obvious that maybe you shouldnt?
Posted by Goon on July 28th, 2007I’ll be checking it out this afternoon, and don’t worry, i’m not going into it with my mind made up. I’m hope to be entertained, and i’m looking forward to it more than i did the last Harry Potter film.
Posted by Jay C. on July 28th, 2007just dont expect it to be up to par with classic episodes… I couldnt fault anyone who isnt satisfied with it, but I think people walking in with raised expectations and/or the general justified cynicism the show has generated the last 8 seasons or so, is walking in at a disadvantage. I’d actually place myself in the latter category but after a shaky start i managed to overcome it.

Posted by jho on July 30th, 2007Nelson, Bart, Mr.Burns, Gil (the salesman) and when he was around, Troy McClure.
Posted by Baychuk on February 29th, 2008Milhouse Van Houten or Ralph Wiggum. I really can’t decide. They are both so pathetic in their own ways, but still have a positive worldview where little things that go right for them make them happy. Very inspiring.
Posted by Matt on June 27th, 2008I’ve been reading about the issue with the simpsons and ‘bart’ promoting scientology. Was checking to see if anyone else had any comments on the ‘issue’. I don’t much like it myself, but also do not care to judge.
