Twilight Zone: The Movie Finally Coming to DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray

A few months ago when I wrote this feature on movies that still haven’t been released on DVD, I knew it was probably only a matter of time before many of them would finally get their due. There’s a market for just about everything out there, and barring any sticky legal issues, there’s no reason not to release most of those flicks. Since then, The Monster Squad has hit stores, we’ve had a street date announcement for William Friedkin’s Cruising, and now it looks like Twilight Zone: The Movie is finally going to get released… in high-definition no less!

The Twilight Zone movie has never been released on DVD, reportedly due to the notorious on-set accident that killed Vic Morrow and two young extras during production… which doesn’t really make sense to me. Wouldn’t it be better to honour their memory by getting the movie out there? Either way, it blows my mind that a movie featuring segments directed by John Landis, Joe Dante, George Miller and Steven F’n Spielberg has not been available to buy on DVD yet. I can tell you that I’ll definitely be picking this one up. Full details are still to come, but Warner Bros will release the movie on Blu-ray, HD DVD and standard DVD on October 9th. It’s about damn time!

  1. The original B&W Twilight Zone series was one of the main reasons I got through university. Not because it helped me pass any courses, but because strangely enough, it helped me maintain my sanity.

I must admit that I was disappointed in this TZ movie. I think my main problem was that they redid three of the old stories. I would have preferred all brand new material.

I read a book about the TZ trials regarding the deaths of Vic Morrow and the kids. John Landis and the helicopter pilot were absolved of all guilt. Reading about what happened, I guess that the movie gods must be responsible for deaths on movie sets being so infrequent.

Spielberg’s publicity team should be commended for managing to keep Spielberg’s reputation intact after this tragedy.

I wonder what kinds of extras will be on the DVD. I remember seeing the helicopter crash footage somewhere, but I suppose it would be in poor taste to include it in a bloopers segment. I can’t believe I actually said that.

  2. There’s a short video about helicopter crashes in films, and it contains the scene in which this accident took place:

  3. I loved this movie when I saw it as a kid. I’ll buy the DVD.
