Disturbia Team to Tackle Y The Last Man… Why Indeed

Over the last year or so, it had been looking like the feature film adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn’s comic book series Y The Last Man was not going to happen anytime soon. I was okay with that… after all, the comics were still going strong, and I was in no hurry to see it on the big screen. Well now, with the series winding down and only a few issues away from its #60 conclusion, it appears that someone thought they should jolt this project out of its coma and get it moving again. Their solution: recruit Disturbia director and screenwriter D.J. Caruso and Carl Ellsworth. Oh fuck.

I suppose in the back of my mind I realize there are elements of a Y The Last Man that need to be targetted at teens and infused with pop culture references, but I don’t know if I can stand to see one of the only comic books I’ve ever read on a semi-regular basis turned into a commercial for iPods, X-Box 360s and everything else that’s hip and now. Somehow I was hoping for someone to take this project on and give it the serious post-apocalyptic treatment it deserves. But coming from the team that directed one of my least favourite movies of the year, I have pretty much lost all hope. The movie is also being produced by Chris Bender, JC Spink and Mason Novick (American Pie series, Kyle XY, Red Eye), and of course, Hollywood’s comic book guru David Goyer. I’m sure you can see where this movie is heading, and it doesn’t look good. Well, I suppose there will always be the sequel, right?

  1. I’m guessing this will have shia labeouf in it too…*sigh*. It could have been so good. (So could have transformers.)

  2. I think bad comic movies might bring people back to the comics. I mean I don’t know what’ll happen with this one or Watchmen but I am not optimistic. Though Y could if it had the right people. Too bad it doesn’t seem like it will. Who knows they might get that Shia kid to play Yorick that’d make it hip and cool right? Disney Channel kid + monkey in world full of women has family/sex comedy written all over it.

  3. I love the comic, so this news is a bit depressing, but then again, DJ Caruso is responsible for The Salton Sea, so that gives me some hope. Some.
