New To Theatres This Weekend – July 20, 2007
This weekend at the cineplex we are faced with an interesting proposition: Adam Sandler and Kevin James as a gay couple, or John Travolta in drag? To be honest I’m not really psyched for either option, but at least Hairspray should have some camp value right? Although, if the highly positive reviews are to be believed, it may actually have something more to offer. I was really hoping to see Danny Boyle’s Sunshine, but alas Fox Searchlight buckled at the last minute and decided to open it on a measly 10 screens across North America. It should expand next week, however. Also in select theatres is Milos Forman’s latest Goya’s Ghosts starring Natalie Portman.

I saw Goya’s Ghosts acouple weeks ago (would have written a review if I had a comp at home) and it’s really good. It’s sort of disjointed, and it doesn’t really focus on characters as much as the time. Definitely not a biopic, and the title is really appropriate, even if it sounds like a dumb play on words to sell a biopic.
Check it out if you can I’d say. 3/4.
Posted by Henrik on July 20th, 2007Thanks for the info Henrik. The reviews have been less than favourable but it still looked rather interesting.
I have no interest in anything opening this weekend and “Sunshine” doesn’t open in Canada until the 27th. Another week!
Posted by Marina on July 20th, 2007Goyas Ghosts sitting at 25% on rotten tomatoes. ouch.
Posted by Goon on July 21st, 2007What’s the rating on Cars?
These are same douchebags who didn’t appreciate TMNT! Don’t trust that.
Posted by Henrik on July 21st, 2007thats not why I would hesitate to trust the reviews… the reason i say “ouch” is because its a Milos Forman film, and Forman and bad movies dont really go hand in hand.
Posted by Goon on July 21st, 2007It’s definitely a Milos Forman film, for better or worse. I happen to love his childish humor, but I can’t imagine many a hardened american critic appreciating it.
