Zodiac Director’s Cut DVD Coming in 2008
Are you planning on picking up David Fincher’s Zodiac on DVD when it hits stores next week? If so, you may want to reconsider. According to an ad that is packaged with the upcoming barebones edition, there will be a special director’s cut of Zodiac released sometime in 2008. Special features will include (but may not be limited to):
- audio commentary with David Fincher, actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey, Jr., screenwriter James Vanderbilt, producer Brad Fischer and crime novelist James Ellroy
- extensive behind-the-scenes featurettes detailing the production from start to finish
- in-depth looks at the actual Zodiac crimes, including all-new interviews with the original investigators and survivors
While that all sounds well and good, the real question on my mind is whether or not the director’s cut will actually improve the film, or just make it even more long and drawn out. Let’s face it, there aren’t many director’s cuts that are actually shorter than the original (Oliver Stone’s Alexander being one of the few exceptions), and I would be pretty surprised to find out that the studio pressured Fincher into making the original theatrical cut a hefty 157 minutes against his will. Still, I desperately want to give this movie another chance, so maybe the director’s cut will give me the excuse I am looking for.

It seems I may be the only person who liked this movie. Of the four people I went with I was the only one who thought it wasn’t terrible. (I actually loved this movie.) So I will most likely be going out for this Directors Cut and not buying it when it’s first out… I just hope the directors cut comes out sooner in 2008 rather then later.
On the note of Directors Cuts shorter then Theatricals, I’m fairly certain (as I own both versions) that the Directors Cut of Crash was a few minutes shorter then the Theatrical cut… which was odd as I noticed nothing overly different between the cuts aside from one (small) additional scene in the Directors Cut being added in.
Posted by Aaron on July 16th, 2007Don’t worry Aaron, you’re not the only person who liked the movie. I’ve seen it mentioned on a lot of people’s midway through 2007 “Best Of” lists. People seem to be pretty divided. Believe me, I wanted to like it, and there were a lot of things about it that I did like. But it just kept going and going and going.
Posted by Sean on July 16th, 2007I also loved this movie ad will be waiting for the director’s cut.
Another film with a director’s cut that is shorter than the theatrical release is Alien. The theatrical release was 117 minutes and the director’s cut is 116.
Posted by Rian on July 16th, 2007Sean, the four people I went with also thought it went on and on and on. Personally I was completely into the film the whole way through and was shocked to hear that they thought it was slow and dragged on. Then again . . . I have been watching a lot of those ‘unsolved mysteries’, ‘city confidential’, ‘case files’ sort of shows on tv for the past year or so, perhaps they made me acustomed to a sort of monitone narative. Although that would only be in the case of murder mysteries as I still get bored in other sorts of movies, though none come to mind right now… there have been a few this past summer/spring.
