I love Pixar, but I’m not a fan of the fact that because of their great track record, people are so quick to suggest that every new project they work on could be “the bad one” of the lot. Sure, cars wasn’t as heartwarming and original as say Toy Story or Monsters Inc., but as far as being a bad movie, I can’t believe anyone would call it that. I didn’t like the story as much as some Pixar films, but I still had a smile on my face for the duration of the film, it looked beautiful, and I came away pleased.

On the subject of sequels, I have the same complaint. Why does everyone assume as soon as they hear the word sequel that it’s going to be inferior to the first? Lots of people (myself not included) believe Toy Story 2 to be better than the original. Why not believe that the same could happen with Cars 2 or Toy Story 3? Also, why is it that so many people seem to be begging for a sequel to The Incredibles if they’re so opposed to Pixar sequels?

I say just sit back and let the company do what it wants. If you don’t like Cars 2 (if and) when it comes out, then fine. Go watch a movie you like and wait for the next Pixar film.

When Lasseter took over Disney animation, his first edict was ‘no more sequels’ – Pixar OR Disney, besides ones that had already been so far into production that they couldnt turn back. that includes Toy Story 3.

With that in mind, I have a hard time believing this news item.

As much as I was underwhelmed by Cars though, and even though there are inherent flaws with the concept that would remain in the sequel, there was room enough to improve to make a movie I could actually somewhat like. Also, if Pixars putting out a movie every year, its not the end of the world if they put out one I dont care about.

Thing is, even though a lot of more critically-minded moviegoers didn’t like Cars as much as, say, Monsters Inc, kids ate it up. Cars was HUGELY successful in sucking the children in. More so than a lot of the recent Pixar films. Also, the merchandising for this film was unbelievable. There was so much stuff generated for this movie (toy cars, clothes, etc) and it is still selling like crazy, especially for young boys. Also, a lot of “grown-ups” liked it, with it’s pandering to middle America and emphasis on the nation’s number one sport, NASCAR. So a sequel makes sense in that it probably won’t suck suck, and it will make insane amounts of cash.
