Michael Moore to Target Homophobia in Next Film?

Despite being forced to slug it out with all of the summer blockbusters, Michael Moore’s Sicko has held its own since it was released last month, garnering strong reviews and already becoming the sixth highest grossing documentary of all time. Well after finding a lot of people surprisingly receptive to what he had to say about the American health care system, it looks like Moore’s next movie may take on a much more touchy subject: homophobia.

“I think it’s a very ripe subject for someone like me to make a movie about. Simply because we are not there yet and it remains one of the last open wounds on our soul that we are not willing to fix yet.”

Moore certainly knows how to choose topics that are going to push people’s buttons, and for that I salute him. There’s plenty of ammunition for him to work with here too, and after movies like Jesus Camp and Deliver Us From Evil, it seems like a lot of filmmakers are really taking it to the religious right. The unfortunate bottom line is that, in my opinion, a movie about homophobia would have even less chance of changing people’s minds than any of Moore’s previous films put together. Most people have chosen a side, dug a trench and simply will not budge on this issue. Interestingly, I’ve heard that it was Sacha Baron Cohen who inspired Michael Moore to pull off the brilliant stunt in the finale of Sicko, and now I wonder if he’s taking a cue from him again since Cohen’s upcoming Bruno movie will be covering some of the same ground, albeit in a very different way. Incidentally, there is also at least one other documentary on gay marriage out there that I know about called Tying the Knot . What do you think, can Moore really make a difference with this topic, or is he just wasting his time?

  1. It would be interesting. Theres not a whole lot of facts and figures out there that people would dispute about this whole thing either, really the whole movie would be heartstrings pulling and moralizing, something Moore very much likes to do.

The only downside, and I dont think Moore should give a shit, is that a movie telling America that its okay to be gay wont exactly bring in the crowds.

  2. Micheal Moore may be jumping the gun on his next topic. It’s obvious that Health Care is a topic that resonated with people from all walks of life (except, of course, the medical establishment, corporations, rich people and the government)
He should choose whatever taboo is closest to the surface of the national consciousness. It seems to me that a film on racism is more in line with what the public is willing to talk about at this time. After all, we have an African American right now seriously contending for presidential candidate. I think the subject of race appeals to a wider audience, although it may actually be too dangerous a subject.
