Top 10 Movies That Ruined Our Childhood Memories
As the money continues to roll in from Transformers, we’re all left wondering which 80’s cartoon is going to end up on the big screen next. Will it be G.I. Joe? Voltron? Thundercats? Turbo Teen? Meanwhile, over at Best Week Ever, they’ve put together an amusing list of previous films that have preyed on our need for nostalgia, only to take those precious childhood memories and urinate all over them. I don’t necessarily think that the Transformers movie falls into this category, but let’s face it… the Hollywood track record with these kinds of movies ain’t all that hot. Here is the list they came up with:
10. Inspector Gadget
9. The Flintstones
8. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (remake)
7. Garfield
6. Super Mario Brothers
5. Scooby Doo
4. Street Fighter
3. Masters of the Universe
2. How The Grinch Stole Christmas
1. Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace
I actually liked Tim Burton’s take on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but it’s pretty hard to argue with the rest. Can you think of any others that deserve to be on the list? Is there any hope for these kinds of movies in the future?

Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider were pretty bad.
Posted by mike on July 5th, 2007Mortal Kombat at least had camp value and a cool soundtrack.
Transformers would become my no.1 on this list.
Posted by Goon on July 5th, 2007The Cat In The Hat
Posted by TheSnowLeopard on July 5th, 2007Maaaaaaaaaaan……….Masters of the Universe is awesome! Hahaha, not really. But I would consider it a Must See DVD *wink*
Posted by Matt on July 5th, 2007The funny thing about Masters of the Universe is that back then we just kind of accepted it for what it is. Could you imagine if that was released today! The internet would probably explode.
Posted by Sean on July 5th, 2007guys… I have a humble request. do a podcast early. no cinemaslave this week, movie blog is all mailbag, movie patron is late… im movie podcast hungry. do it early or do one extra. please? even if its just one or two of you.
Posted by Goon on July 5th, 2007I was planning on doing an audio review or two. (Something I’d like to do more regularily if there’s an audience for it) Maybe i’ll be able to get something up.
Posted by Jay C. on July 5th, 2007I enjoy the audio reviews. I think I’m going to go watch Masters of the Universe now since I caught the end of Rocky IV last night (best training montage ever!) and found myself wondering how things turned out for Drago?
Posted by Ian on July 5th, 2007I didn’t mind the live action Grinch movie. It’s not as good as the original animated film, but it didn’t botch the story or anything in my opinion. Personally my youth was crushed by Alien vs. Predator. I grew up reading the comics and playing with the toys, but that’s where they should have left that concept…at least until a worthwhile script came about or a better director showed some interest. With one fell swoop they completely ruined the continuity and validity of two of the best monsters in film history.
Jay – I really enjoy the audio reviews. The one for Prince Of Darkness was great.
Posted by Rian on July 5th, 2007Out of this list, I thought all these movies were going to be terrible going into it except for Charlie and Chocalate Factory and The Phantom Menace. Phantom Menace is the only one of the list that disappointed me. Masters of the Universe was pretty hilarious though, I remember diggin that musical jingle to turn on that time portal thingy.
I also enjoy the audio reviews you do Jay.
Posted by Primal on July 5th, 2007The audio reviews are good, if slightly predictable.
Do one for something that’s not a genre movie – now that would be a stretch.
Posted by Henrik on July 6th, 2007Slightly predictable? I’ve only done two! Anyways, I will try and get something up very soon.
Posted by Jay C. on July 6th, 2007I liked Phantom Menace a lot better than Attack of the Clones. Off that list….the worst is Cat in the Hat, its just wrong.
