Indiana Jones 4 Will Not Use Any Computer Effects?

People have been dying to hear more details about the new Indiana Jones movie, but aside from this Spielberg-snapped photograph of Harrison Ford on the set, info about the film has been pretty hard to come by thus far. Recently producer Frank Marshall was interviewed in the New Haven Register and he revealed one small tidbit that should be of interest to fans. He said that Spielberg is dead set on keeping Indy 4 true to the feel of the previous films — which means resisting the urge to use computer effects.

“Steven is very aware of the process and we’re not cheating with CG (computer graphics) at all… It keeps the B movie feel.”

Now this is a simple quote that could be interpreted in a lot of ways. On the one hand, it sounds like they are not using any CG, period. However, he does also say they’re not “cheating” with it, which may just mean that they are using practical effects as much as possible, but still employing CG effects when there is no other choice. Regardless of the exact implications, I think this is a sign that they are heading in the right direction with the film. Although I really enjoyed Live Free or Die Hard, one thing that really made it stick out from the original films was the ubiquitous use of computer effects. (The obvious aesthetic differences between the original Star Wars trilogy and the prequels also come to mind.) The lack of CG should, at any rate, help our minds slip back to the 80’s just a little more seamlessly when we finally get around to watching this film. More importantly, we can finally put those silly CGI bullwhip rumours to bed for good.

  1. I remember some questionable blue screen work in the 3rd film during the stuff with the Zepplin and Indy and his Dad in the plane. I’d say it’s okay for them to use a bit of cg in cases like this but if they jump the shark with some kind of alien city or something it’ll be a different kind of movie.

  2. If this is true, I’m all for it. I’ve been saying for some time now that I’d like to see some CGI-free movies. Film used to exist before CGI, so why do we need to use it all the time now? I miss the special effects of films like Aliens and The Terminator.

  3. Maybe Spielberg watched Death Proof and realized something.
