James Gunn To Direct Masters of Horror Episode and Serious Horror Film?

I still haven’t seen too many episodes from Showtime’s Masters of Horror series, but there are a handful I’ve been meaning to watch, particularly from certain directors that interest me. (I’m still waiting for that box set though.) Each season they seem to be throwing a few new filmmakers into the mix, which helps to keep the proceedings from getting too stale, and now an interesting name is rumoured to be a possibility for Masters of Horror Season 3. James Gunn, writer/director of Slither, and writer of the Dawn of the Dead remake, has apparently spoken with series mastermind Mick Garris about contributing an episode. He says it’s just a matter of working through schedules to make it happen.

“It’s true I talked to Mick and the guys about it. It’s even true we talked about a specific idea. BUT my availability is always a difficult thing (mostly because I want to beat Joe Matt’s record of masturbating twenty times in one day, and I’m in training, but still…)… IF our schedules jive, and IF there is a third seasons, and IF I can get over my current apathy toward the horror genre in general, then it’s a distinct possibility.”

Masturbation aside, I am curious as to what exactly is keeping him so busy right now. There was a rumour a while back that he is writing a script for a new, non-humourous horror movie, but it hasn’t started production as far as I know. Either way, Gunn is one director that I would definitely go out of my way to watch a Masters of Horror episode from. Whether it’s funny or not, I’m sure it would still be gory as hell, as Lloyd Kaufman of Troma has trained him well. I am curious about that new movie though too. More info as it develops.

  1. I’ve only seen one episode of the Masters Of Horror, but I would definitely make a point of seeing one from Gunn. Slither was my second favorite movie last year, only slightly beaten out by Children Of Men. I saw Dawn Of The Dead as well, but just based on Slither I’m ready for anything James Gunn throws my way.
