Monday Morning Box Office Report: July 2, 2007
Looks like all the Pixar doubters were proven wrong once again, as Brad Bird’s Ratatouille received not only fantastic reviews, but it also pulled in a solid $47 million in its opening weekend. These guys are about as sure a bet as you can find in showbiz right now. Granted, $47 million doesn’t come close to the $70 million openings of some of their previous movies like Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. Live Free or Die Hard was a comfortable #2 with $33 million, and yes, Evan Almighty somehow continued to make money, dropping down to #3. Meanwhile, Michael Moore’s Sicko made the top 10, despite playing in just over 400 theatres, and secured the second highest opening for a documentary ever (behind Fahrenheit 9/11 obviously).
1. Ratatouille — $47.2M
2. Live Free or Die Hard — $33.1M
3. Evan Almighty — $15.1M
4. 1408 — $10.6M
5. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer — $9M
6. Knocked Up — $7.42M
7. Ocean’s Thirteen — $6.05M
8. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End — $5.01M
9. Sicko — $4.5M
10. Evening — $3.51M

the premise for Ratatouille is nowhere near as overtly commercial as previous Pixar films, and I’m sure that made one dent. Coming out the Fourth of July/Canada Day weekend would hit to a small degree (dude, did you see the roads yesterday? it took me 3 hours to get from Oakville to St Catharines to visit someone), and even though you wouldnt think it was competition, several of these other new releases definitely affected things.
Posted by Goon on July 2nd, 2007Well I think a big reason that Ratatouille made less money is because Cars was such a piece of shit.
It usually goes so that movies coming off something extremely popular rake in the cash, while movies coming off not-as-popular movies take a hit financially. And even though the movie isn’t a sequel it’s another aminated movie from Pixar, which is basically the same.
