Fred Dekker Planning Monster Squad Sequel?

With 80’s cult classic Monster Squad finally set to hit DVD next month, director Fred Dekker has seemingly been inspired to consider bringing back the characters for another adventure some 20 years later. He recently told Dread Central in an interview that he had been kicking around some ideas with the cast members. Not that it necessarily means this will amount to anything.

“At Monster Mania, I was sitting around with the Squad and we started talking about ‘where are these characters today?’… I got really excited about it the more we talked about it; imagine Rudy as an auto mechanic in Detroit with a crumbling marriage and an alcohol problem, and he gets a phone call from his old pal Sean who tells him they gotta get back together. That’s a movie I would go see!”

I guess enough DVD sales could truly make anything happen, but I have a hard time believing there’d be much of an audience for this. Maybe you could convince Anchor Bay to release it direct to DVD or something though. Dekker really hasn’t been doing much lately, and it would certainly be nice to see him to direct again. His most recent gig was as a writer and consulting producer on Enterprise, and before that it was the ill-conceived Robocop 3 back in ‘93. Eeesh.

  1. a monster squad sequel would be great, theres already a lost boys sequel coming,it would be awesome to see everybody reprise their role and kick some ass(more vampire killing please) i know the fanbase isnt the biggest but i think we all deserve it

  2. Personally, I both like and dislike the idea of a Monster Squad sequel. If you’re confused about me saying “like and dislike”, allow me a chance to explain.

I like the fact that there is talks about making a sequel to this movie. Afteral, this movie is truly one of my favorite child-hood movies. No matter how old I get, still, I enjoy watching this movie, and it never gets “old”. I also really enjoyed the 20th anniversary DVD.

However, I dislike the idea of making a sequel to this movie for a couple of reasons. First, all of the actors and actresses who played each of the main characters in this movie are now adults, not young kids. I think that one factor would change the tone for a sequel, since the audience is used to seeing “kids” in the monster squad.

Secondly, I don’t know if all the actors/actresses who were in this film would be willing to come back for a sequel. I can NOT imagine someone else playing Rudy other than Ryan Lambert, or someone else playing Sean other than Andre Gower. As for “Fat kid”, in case if any of you didn’t know, the actor who played Horace (Fat kid) was Brent Chalem. He passed away back in 1997 from Penumonia at the young age of 22. Therefore, he won’t be able to come back for a sequel.

In my honest and humble opinion, the only way that a sequel would work is if they somehow got all the cast members back from the orginal monster squad, and somehow managed to work in a story line for Brent Chalem’s character, “Horace”. They could write into the story line that Horace had passed away, and that death is what brings the squad back together.

I also think a really good scene for this idea would be to have Sean going through his old belongings, and have him come across and old box with stuff from his child-hood in the box, like the diary of Van Helsing from the first movie, as well as his old red Stephen King Rules t-shirt. After moving these two items out of the way, he finds an old picture envelope, and inside are pictures of him and his monster squad friends when they were kids. This would be a perfect time to insert some pictures of Horace into the mix. While doing this, they could play sweet music from the first Monster Squad. You know, the music that was playing whenever Phoebe was introducing Frankenstein to her friends. It was also the music on the DVD extras whenever they were showing pictures of Brenth Chalem. That would be aweseome, and I think that would be like a golden cameo moment that would touch not only the cast, but all the fans.

I’m imagining that there has to be some old photos laying around that were taken on the set of the first movie. If not, they could always use computer programs to generate some pictures from photo stills of the first movie, and piece them together to look like genuine old photos.

Anyhow, I could go on and on about this. I do really like the idea, but at the same time I dislike the idea since I feel that it will be difficult to get all the right factors to line-up in order to produce a successful sequel to this movie. I don’t mean successful as in simply ticket sales. I mean successful as in a movie that will truly be enjoyed and cherished like the first monster squad movie, and won’t detract from the frist movie either.

  3. Well, I just finished reading some information over at IGN.com, and I seen that Duncan Regher, who played Dracula in this movie stated he would be willing to play Dracula once more in a sequel, so that is a positive note.

  4. yea i know fat kid died, and the only way (i think) they could do it is straight to video which i wouldnt mind, but i really loved ur idea about sean looking through pictures of fat kid and the squad, and heres another thought, what if some kinda powerful vampire or demon put a curse on horace and thats why he died, and in the process he or it is planning world domination and its up to the squad to stop it, idk somethin like that

  5. and i understand about ur dislike, but its fun to think about it though, plus i dont think ryan lambert would do it, hes too busy with his band elephone, have u herd them, if not u should definately check em out

  6. Thanks for the replies Jason. It’s good to see someone else taking an interest in this subject.

Yeah, I know that Ryan Lambert of Elephone is busy, but I would think that for something like this he would be willing to make an acception. He did return for the 20th anniv. DVD, now didin’t he? Can’t say the same thing for Michael Faustino or Robby Kiger. What ever happened to those two guys anyways ?

I’m glad you liked my idea, and I agree about your plot understanding. Indeed, working Horace’s death into the mix would be a nice touch.

I was thinking that his death would be at the hands of Dracula, or someone else working for Dracula in this dimension.

I also figured they could write into the story line that Horace died because he had possesion of the amulet (assuming it wasn’t sucked into the other dimension in the first movie), and that someone killed him in trying to obtain it in order to release Dracula from the other side. Possibly a powerful Wicca who was into black magic could be used to fulfill this role, since it would take someone with a knowledge of the dark arts to open such a portal and use such an amulet. That would be kinda cool.

This is also where the story line could pick up at the start of the movie. Once Sean realizes what has happened, he knows he has to regather the squad, and act fast before the mysterious foe and murderer of Horace finds the amulet. This would also be a good time to have some sort of “riddle” that Horace left behind for the squad to follow in order to find the amulet. The hiding location could be someplace like burried in the roots of the old tree, where their old treehouse used to be, or possibly at their old school.

I’m just gathering and playing with some ideas here. It would be sweet to this all in a movie. However, they all need to be in agreement on what to do. I don’t want to see them make a sequel just to make another movie. It needs to be something that will live up to the reputation of the first movie, and something the fans will approve and enjoy.

I’ve tried searching the internet for forums about this movie, but I can’t seem to find any. I think now would be a good time for fans to start sharing what they would like to see in the movie, so that if Fred Dekker does some web surfing, he’ll see it all, and maybe it will give him some ideas or inclination to make a successful sequel.

  7. Another possibility that could be worked into the mix is the idea of time differences between dimensions. If my memory is serving me correctly, the amulet from the first film could only be shattered once every 100 years. However, 100 years could pass in another dimension (like the one Dracula was banished to), and it would only be like 20 years here or something in our dimension and in this world.

This “could” work as an element of surprise for the monster squad, since they believe it’s still safe for another 100 years, only to come to find out that 100 years has passed in Dracula’s reality and in the limbo where he dwells, and but only 20 years here.

They could also include an appearance by Van Helsing in either a dream, or possibly in some spirit conjuration spell to speak to Sean, and warn him of the dangers that are happening, and to make sure that Sean prepares himself.

Again, just throwing out ideas and suppostion for now.

  8. thats good stuff, ive also thought if pheobe starts falling for a guy thats actually the bad guy or is working for the bad guy or something like that.
another thought though, what other classic monsters could they put in there since it is the “monster” squad, maybe the invisible man or something

also, do u know how to get in touch with mr dekker

  9. I wish these things weren’t limited in post length

  10. Jason, I don’t know how to get in touch with Dekker. Wish I did though.

  11. BTW, I “think” there is a group for the Monster Squad on Myspace. I know Andre Gower has a Myspace page.

  12. If there is anyone else out there who is interested in this film, and would like to see a sequel, now would be a good time to speak up, and say something.

Jason, I hope you will post again. As for the idea of the invisible man, it sounds like a cool character, but I don’t know if they could work it into the script or not.

What I would really like to see is a sequel without loads of CGI, and more realistic camera effects and some really good make-up and cosutmes. I personally miss that element, since a lot of movies now days are all about CGI to the point that it’s boring anymore.

  13. yea cgi wouldnt work, especially if it was straight to video, but i dont know why fred dekker shouldnt do it, hes not really doing much, if anything, he could tie the movie in with night of the creeps, or jus make a night of the creeps sequel or somehthing

  14. i guess were on our own

  15. Well, hopefully someone else will eventually comment (but don’t hold your breath).

I tried finding a site for Dekker, and I didn’t come up with anything. THe only thing I could find was the Myspace group for the monster squad, and that was about it. I know Andre Gower has a Myspace account (and I think Ryan does as well). If someone could contact them, they may would know a way to reach Dekker.

Maybe we’ll get lucky, and Dekker will browse the internet and come across this page. We can only hope so.

As for Night of the creeps, sadly, I can’t remember if I’ve seen that movie or not. I know Dekker made it, but I can’t remember ever seeing it. I guess if it gets released on DVD that is something I’ll have to look into watching.

  16. as far as i know, night of the creeps is on youtube, check it out!

  17. Thanks for the tip Jason, I appreciate it.

  18. Lord knows i would give a limb to see a good sequel to this flick. I just dont think its possible really to make anything as on par with the first one. I was born the year it came out and have pretty much been watching it since, minus the past eight years since my parents taped over it, and now that i finally have it back and i am still scared to wetting myself at the wolfman and i still blubber like a baby when frankensteins monster throws the mask and says “…scary”. I mean most of that may be left over childhood fears (and tears) but…and i really dont want to be negative but it might be best to just leave it alone…unless of course you could have a now dead “scary german guy ” come back as a zonbie. I dont care how horrible the rest of the movie is, that woule be too cool in my book.

  19. finally another post! lol i cant believe it took this long, well i understand about leaving the movie alone, i grew up on it, watched it prolly everyday, then it became a halloween tradition, but hey lost boys 2 is comin out soon and if thats good then u never know what could happen. ever since “squad” came out on dvd and got such great treatment i jus got so excited about seeing a continuation, also indy and rambo did it, so why not the squad?

  20. omg, i havent seen dis film in ages i love it nd andre gower was sooooooo fit wen e was a kid lol

  21. Wow, it seems there are a few more posts since I last checked in.

Chris, I don’t know if bringing scary German guy back from the dead would go over real well. His role was more or less that of a friendly guide to the squad, and his old age as a human being is what gave him his charm. I think him being a zombie might come off a bit odd, unless if you’re talking about a more friendly zombie, like Billy Butcherson in the movie “Hocus Pocus” ?

Anyhow, there has been no updates yet, but that doesn’t mean that won’t change. Hopefully, if Dekker decides to give this thing the green light, he will give this some serious thought beforehand, because I don’t think he wants to tarnish or take away from the first movie anymore than we want to see that happen.

  22. heads up everybody theres crappy remake on its way!! so we probably put the idea of a sequel to bed

  23. Who wants to wait for Fred Dekker to make a sequel? a fan-made teaser trailer is out now with a 5 minute trailer coming soon!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gL7o6Bp3Sqk

  24. Hey Jason, if you’re still browsing this site, do you happen to know where you heard that a crappy sequel is on the way ? Thanks.

  25. its on this site man, rob cohen is producing it

  26. full 5 minute fan trailer for ‘The Monster Squad 2′

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwEAj4WLZQU

  27. Well, to be honest with you, I have been watching that movie as a kid a lot and I am happy thta it cameout on dvd FINALLY. And want to too all the members come together again and I REALLY DON’T WANT THIS TO BE A LOW-BUDGET MOVIE. And for Rudy, I think they had better come up with a better idea with rudy in the storyline instead of him be a mechanic with a drinking prblem and a crumbling marriage. In the storyline, I think he’s better off not being married. And the drinking problem the fans would not have liked in the begining. But I would like to see him riding a black American Chopper, wearing that good ol’ leather jacket, with new Harley boots, still carries the bow and arrow(stake tips),and his fire-arms would be a huge S&M .500 Magnum(with silver bullets), and a big-game lever-action rifle. If there would be any werewolves in the movie( I hope there will be), I want to see him wield the .500 Magnum because when comes to killing a werewolf, why not used a big handgun? that’d be cool!
