Open Forum Friday: What is the Best Stephen King Adaptation?
Well even if you’re not a big fan of horror, odds are you’ve probably seen at least a few of Stephen King’s stories on screen in some shape or form. Not only did he provide the source material for such well-known fright flicks as The Shining, Children of the Corn and Cujo, but he also wrote a variety of others that include Stand By Me, The Green Mile, and yes, even The Running Man. And regardless of whether or not he may be past his prime now, it’s hard to deny the impact he has had on fiction and just pop culture in general. So with the release of 1408 this weekend, I thought it was a good time to ask, what’s your favourite Stephen King adaptation? There’s really so much to choose from, especially if you consider TV adaptations as well. I put up a poll below, but there are definitely some big ones that wouldn’t fit on the list so feel free to write more in the comments below. Go ahead and give us your thoughts here on Open Forum Friday!

Definitely some good stuff there, but The Shining is just so amazing…. gyah, the bathroom conversation scene! I need to watch that again.
Posted by Derek on June 22nd, 2007Shawshank seems like the most obvious answer, but damn it if it aint the right one.
Posted by Goon on June 22nd, 2007I choose Shining but you forgot Misery. That was would have been my top choice!
You also forgot Pet Semetary, that was another great one. Man, I didn’t realize how many of his stories were adapted into movies that you could have used (Firestarter, Cats Eye, Dolores Claiborne).
Posted by Tanya on June 22nd, 2007I don’t know if Creepshow counts, as King wrote the screenplay and I think most of the segments were written specifically for the film. According to imdb, ‘weeds’ and ‘the create’ were taken from short stories previously written.
Posted by Jay C. on June 22nd, 2007I voted for The Shawshank Redemption because…well…how could I not? Aside from that, though, I honestly think that my favorite Stephen King movie is The Langoliers. I prefer it to most of his films because it’s very much a science fiction film, whereas most of his stuff is plain horror. There are still elements of horror, but King’s concept of time travel and how things work in the past is great and really made me think. As Philip K. Dick said:
“If it is good [science fiction] the idea is new, it is stimulating, and, probably most important of all, it sets off a chain-reaction of ramifications in the mind of the reader; it so-to-speak unlocks the reader’s mind so that that mind, like the author’s, begins to create.”
Posted by Rian on June 22nd, 2007I remember the TV version of the Shining starring the goofy brother from Wings. It was very well done and stayed true to the book. When you have 4 hours…it’s easier. Good none the less.
Posted by Greg on June 22nd, 2007I’m going with The Green Mile. Not necessarily for the plot or what actually happens in the movie but Tom Hanks fucking rules when he’s tired and uninteresting. Watch Road to Perdition too because it’s, in my OPINION OF COURSE!!!!!!!!!, his best performance, ever, in the history of the cinema in the world of planet earth. There it is.
Posted by Henrik on June 23rd, 2007Part of me wants to say the TV adaptation of The Stand, but I think I’m going to have to lean towards Stand By Me. That’s such a great film, and it’s really held it’s own over the years.
And to echo what Greg said, the TV version of THe Shining was BRILLIANT. Kubrick’s film was great and all, but it was more “inspired by” than adapted from the book. The Stephen Weber version is dead on.
Two other quick S.King things to mention. 1) I can’t wait for the tv/film adaptation of The Dark Tower — it’s semi-announced, but no directions has been mentioned to my knowledge. I vote for HBO mini-series myself. 2) I desperately wish someone would make a good version of The Dead Zone. The Cronenberg flick was just ok, and the TV show makes my eyes bleed. They should have left that kid in The Breakfast Club where he belonged. The Dead Zone is my favorite King book by far and it just kills me that no one has made a brilliant film yet.
Posted by Jim Squires on June 23rd, 2007I voted for The Shawshank Redemption as well. Although Kubrick’s The Shining was awesome, I liked the TV version much more.
The Green Mile and Stand by Me are also pretty damn good adaptations, but I’d give the edge to Shawshank.
Posted by Primal on June 24th, 2007Hmmmm, anything that Frank Darabont directs seems to be the best film adaptations… Shawshank, Green Mile and now I understand he’s doing “The Mist”? Considering SK said he’d never make that story into a movie and it’s my personal fav, I am really looking forward to it. I also thought Misery directed by “Meathead” was great… and it’s unfortunate that most of his horror films were just plain goofy…
Posted by Fade on June 24th, 2007the best one isnt out until the fall, The Mist is my alltime fav King story and i cant wait for the flick. i loved Stand By Me, Shawshank, Misery, Green Mile.
as for the Dark Towers, i would love to see it be made for the screen, but i dont think that King would want it, unless he has full control.
Posted by Chopper on June 24th, 2007can someone explain how the “lawnmower man” story turned into a freakin cyber-reality flick?
also though i LOVE kubtricks the shining, i dont think it was very true to the king version. i never saw no attacking fire hydrants …
Posted by travis bickle on June 25th, 2007The Night Flier. Plus Kubrick’s The Shining.
Posted by darkbhudda on June 26th, 2007I know this post is starting to get a little dusty, but a friend of mine was telling my how great 1408 was last night and we got to talking about SK movies. Fantastic one we all forgot to mention? Apt Pupil.
