Matthew Vaughn in Talks to Direct Thor?
Matthew Vaughn is either a glutton for punishment or in search of redemption, because according to the LA Times he is in talks to direct Marvel’s upcoming Thor movie. You may remember that he was previously slated to direct X-Men 3, but pulled out just 9 weeks before cameras started rolling, citing personal reasons. There were rumours that he had butted heads with producer Avi Arad, but in the end they said the reason for his departure was that he didn’t want to uproot his family for such a long and demanding shoot. He went on to direct Neil Gaiman’s Stardust instead, and his experience there would seem to be applicable to Thor, given the fantasy elements and special effects demands. However, even if Thor is a lower profile film than X-Men 3, it is yet another big Marvel project and I would think most of the same personal issues would still be a problem… wouldn’t they? Why is he going back for round 2, and why is Marvel interested in giving him another chance? Maybe he regrets giving up on X3. Either way, although I haven’t seen Layer Cake, Vaughn sounds like a promising young director and I say give him a shot! Why not? Personally I hope they turn Thor into something as far away from a comic book movie as possible, and I happen to like what I’ve seen of Stardust a lot.

I’ve got no major love of Thor or Matthew Vaughn, so I give this news a half-hearted thumbs up. Vaughn didn’t really impress me with Layer Cake, but hopefully he’ll remedy that with Stardust.
Posted by Rian on June 14th, 2007Layer Cake was pretty good, for what it was.
Neil Gaiman speaks highly of him, and I guess that’s enough for me.
Thor as a movie is a pretty risky idea.
I’m sure Doug Nagy is rapt.

Shakespearian actors would be the best to cast for the kind of dialogue this will demand. Go fantasy with it and it will sell, try to make it gritty and realistic is asking for a one-way direct-to-video ticket.
