David Chase Speaks Up About Sopranos Finale

If you, like most viewers, thought that the final Sopranos episode was a rather unsatisfying way to end the series, you’ve probably been dying to hear writer/creator David Chase try to explain the reasoning behind it. He recently spoke up in a few interviews, although what he has to say probably won’t give you much consolation.

“We did what we thought we had to do. No one was trying to blow people’s minds or thinking, ‘Wow, this’ll (tick) them off’. People get the impression that you’re trying to (mess) with them, and it’s not true. You’re trying to entertain them.”

Now, on the topic of whether or not the series would continue as a feature film franchise, however, he seems to be dealing out some conflicting comments. According to Ain’t It Cool News, he downplayed the possibility of a movie, saying that a feature built around Tony’s children in the future would have “problems” and would cut through the mystery of the finale. But according to the interview I read in the New Jersey Star-Ledger, he left the doors open:

“An idea could pop into my head where I would go, ‘Wow, that would make a great movie,’ but I doubt it… If something appeared that really made a good ‘Sopranos’ movie and you could invest in it and everybody else wanted to do it, I would do it. But I think we’ve kind of said it and done it.”

Hercules over at AICN is absolutely right, however, when he says that a movie would ruin the finale. Any respect I had for that so-called creative decision would be completely undermined if they decided to continue the story. But hey, there’s always the prequel, right?
