Open Forum Friday: Will Tony Soprano Finally Get Whacked?

With the series finale of The Sopranos coming up this Sunday, I thought it would be appropriate to kickstart a discussion around people’s thoughts and predictions about the show. I do feel like this is a pretty big event in television history, although I think in a lot of people’s minds The Sopranos sort of stopped being relevant a while back. It is still easily one of the most important TV shows of all time; not only did it turn HBO into a cable network giant, but it further paved the way for edgy, intelligent and high-quality programming on the small screen, and even helped to ignite the whole TV on DVD craze. And yet, I’d be lying if I said my interest hadn’t dropped over the past few seasons. Perhaps the show has just dragged on a little too long, or maybe it’s because it has been eclipsed by some of the other great programs on TV nowadays. What do you think? Have you been watching the final season? Has it lived up to your expectations? How do you think it will end? Give us your thoughts here on Open Forum Friday. (Warning: Comments may involve spoilers… you’ve been warned!)

  1. Sopranos didnt ‘jump the shark’ with Adrianna’s death, but it kind of crossed a certain line where it made everyone much less sympathetic, and any remaining innocence in any character kinda went out the door, especially Carmella. you can tell she knows what really happened, but will basically let tonys explanations fly so long as she gets what she wants.

i’m not sure how it will end, it looks bad for everyone. i have a couple hopes though

    1) Phil Leotardo dies. what a cocksucker.
    2) they resolve the AJ drama
    3) they resolve this terrorism lingering subplot that has been hanging around so long. even if its a dumb bomb blowing up everyone, they’ve built up so far that it needs to be paid off somehow.

  2. I am pretty sure that AJ’s going to have an important part in the finale. I think you have to touch on whether or not he will continue the pattern or break out of it, and maybe it’s derivative of The Godfather, but they seem to be playing it up as one of the most important story arcs at this point.

My biggest question is whether or not they will actually resolve everything that needs to be resolved. I think it’s going to have to be a pretty insane finale to do that, but maybe they’ll leave some things open to be explored in a Sopranos feature film somewhere down the road.

I’m wondering if they will have a big revelation where Carmella finds out about Adrianna. You’re right though, her death was certainly the start of the series getting a bit weaker, maybe because nothing could top the tension and turmoil that it caused.

  3. Maybe it’s because I haven’t been following the Sopranos from the very start and just caught up recently but I don’t find that the series has declined at all. As far as resolving plotlines, I agree, Carmela discovering what really happened to Adrianna would be pretty significant but I have a feeling that the terrorist connection has to finally come to the forefront. Maybe they’ve been a little obvious with having Agent Harris always hanging around the pork shop but I’m pretty sure the FBI have finally built a solid case to bring down the DiMeo crime family, on the basis of terrorist funding.

  4. “for edgy, intelligent and high-quality programming on the small screen,”

Could somebody please explain to me what could possibly be described as ‘intelligent’ about this melodramatic show?

  5. calling you out Henrik, another hyperbole claim with no backup to support yourself. explain why it is melodramatic.

  6. I guess my question wasn’t worth answering?

After an insanely long run and a fucking lot of episodes, the only thing this show has succeeded in doing is getting people to discuss who will be killed off, thats melodrama in a nutshell.

How about you actually adress what I write instead of putting yourself on a pedestal towards it?

  7. Jeez, Henrik! You’re the one who constantly puts yourself on a pedestal. People have different tastes so why do you feel the need to always leave irrelevant and negative comments on articles which you clearly have no interest in?

  8. How am I putting myself on a pedestal towards anything here? I asked a perfectly legitimate question! How is it irrelevant?

I guess it’s pointless to actually get an answer now. This is turning into another debate about me and how I leave comments. Sorry for budding into your “Sopranos”-discussion.

  9. your question wasnt a real question. you made a baiting statement in the form of a pseudo-question. you were looking to provoke, not for a real answer.

  10. The show gets you to sympathize with a villain like never before and really makes you weigh his actions. The last season in particular took on a ton of social issues. There’s more here than you might think at first glance, although I won’t argue that the popularity is due in large part to the sex and the violence.

Melodrama is definitely not the right word for it though… the characters are too deep and the acting is too good for that to be true.

  11. i have to wait to torrent it but i asked someone who saw it to give me a non spoiler reaction. he says “blue balls”

    :(

  12. I don’t know, my PVR cut off right before the end and then started up again during John From Cincinnati. I think we might have missed something, but if not all I can say is… WTF?!

  13. Haven’t been able to find a torrent yet but I’m hoping someone will have the entire second half of season 6 as I’ve only seen the first half.

  14. Sadly, we didn’t miss anything when the PVR started taping John from Cincinnati. I wanted some sort of closure.

  15. Howdy,
