Ridley Scott’s American Gangster Trailer Starring Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington
After the dud that was A Good Year, Russell Crowe is reteaming with Ridley Scott for a new movie called American Gangster. The movie is a biopic based on the story of Frank Lucas, a crime boss and heroin dealer from 1970’s Harlem, often remembered for his clever scam of smuggling drugs in the coffins of dead Vietnam soldiers. Lucas is played by everyone’s favourite smooth talker Denzel Washington, while Crowe plays Richie Roberts, the cop who attempted to track him down.
I’m a big fan of Ridley Scott’s work, and even though he’s had some stinkers over the years, I’m at the point now where I’ll see just about anything he directs based on his name alone (well, anything except A Good Year that is). This look promising, and although the idea of Russell Crowe being the good guy and Denzel being the bad guy somehow seems wrong for this picture, I am assuming that the movie will end up being mostly sympathetic to Denzel’s character. I enjoy period pieces set in the 70’s, and overall I trust Scott to do a good job with it. Still, on some level I have to wonder if this project have been more suitable for his brother Tony! As a side note, people have gotta stop putting out movies called “American Something or Other”… I can’t keep the damn things straight anymore. American Gangster hits theatres on November 2nd; check out the trailer in HD over at Yahoo! now.

I dunno, this could be very good. To me, one of Denzel’s best roles ever was a “bad guy” in Training Day.
Posted by Evan on June 7th, 2007Personally I disliked Training Day and the fact that he won an Oscar for that role. Denzel just bothers me in a lot of movies, but I have come to accept him in the righteous cop role more than any other.
Posted by Sean on June 7th, 2007This might be a good crime movie and all but I’d really like to see Scott get involved with a good sci-fi project.
Posted by Ian on June 7th, 2007I had the same feeling about the three big names involved, they’ve all made stinkers but this one looks like one of the good ones.
Looks like Oscar bait to me but I’m interested.
Posted by Marina on June 7th, 2007i think it looks great. Denzel is either hot or cold. I personally liked Man on Fire and Training Day. This looks like it could be just as good as those movies.
Posted by Mike on June 7th, 2007…although i don’t really like Russel Crowe.
Still, I’m definitely going to give this a chance.
Posted by Mike on June 7th, 2007What’s wrong with Russell Crowe as a good guy? Have you not seen Cinderella Man? He’s an excellent actor, he does what the role requires and becomes the character. He looks completely different in American Gangster as compare to his character in A Good Year (very underrated movie btw). Anyway, this looks like another topnotched performances from Crowe and Washington. I can’t wait for November 2nd.
Posted by anonymous on June 7th, 2007I haven’t seen Cinderella Man, no.
To be honest I do think Russell Crowe is a decent actor, but lately with all his arrogant antics in real life, I get the feeling that people would relate to him more as a villain. But I actually can’t remember the last time he played a bad guy.
Posted by Sean on June 7th, 2007Russell Crowe is a cool guy… He got a bad rap for getting pissed off at people who were probably assholes towards him anyway. Who wouldn’t get annoyed with people shouting “Are you not entertained!?” at them every chance they got? Come on…
Last movie I saw Denzel in was Inside Man and he was fucking brilliant in that. If he can bring the humor from movies like Inside Man, Philadelphia and The Manchurian Candidate it could be good.
Posted by Henrik on June 7th, 2007This movie exposed coruption in the late 60’s as coruption in law enforcement stands today. Ex DEA agents are trying to sue the filmakers and sponsers for basing a movie on a true story. They are embarresed about how there roles look on film and want more money because, millions of people were exposed to what role the corrupt system plays in the drug world. It’s all about making money.
