Two Directors Duke It Out Over Wolverine Movie
While it still remains to be seen whether or not we’ll get a fourth X-Men movie any time soon, we do know that there are at least two spin-offs in the works: Magneto and Wolverine. Of the two, I think Wolverine is the one I’d much rather see. I just haven’t been sold on either David Goyer as a director, or his proposed take on the Magneto story, and to be fair, the X-Men movies were pretty focused on Wolverine anyway, so this seems to be the most logical continuation.
Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as the cranky Canuck with adamantium claws, but up until now we haven’t really been too sure who might direct this project. Brett Ratner was rumoured to be attached for a while, but now it appears that he has moved on. Instead, IESB.net gives us the inside scoop that apparently Fox is trying to decide between two up and coming filmmakers: Len Wiseman (Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard) and D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, Two For The Money). I can’t say I’m overly fond of either one, but of the two, Len Wiseman would easily be my choice. Disturbia was one of the most annoying movies I have actually sat through so far this year, although it’s probably due more to the story and the target audience of the film than the direction. Wiseman at least has a handle on action and some sense of style. Either way, I’m not going to say that the wrong director could ruin the Wolverine flick, because I honestly didn’t think Brett Ratner’s involvement had a negative effect on X-Men: The Last Stand. What will really matter is the story (written by David Benioff of The 25th Hour fame) and the production quality… hopefully they can keep it on par with the previous X-Men films, although I’m sure the budget will be scaled back a bit. Are you looking forward to these spin-offs or would you rather just see an X-Men 4?

I’d like to see X-men type “spin-offs” (if that applies) of characters that weren’t in the original X-men movies. Minor characters who could hold their own. A Gambit movie, for example, would get me excited.
Posted by Mike on June 6th, 2007I absolutely hated X-Men 3. At this point I’m of the opinion that they should let the series go for a while. However, I’m not 100% opposed to a Wolverine solo movie. If this happens, what I’d like to see is the Weapon X story from Marvel Comics Presents in which Wolvie gets the adamantium bonded to his skeleton. Throw Sabretooth in there and mix it up with some back story and maybe an appearance by Maverick. As far as a director, I’ve never seen anything directed by D.J. Caruso, but I thought that Len Wiseman’s Underworld was pretty damn bad. That was probably more because of the story than the directing, though. I hate to say it, but as time goes on I’m becoming more and more skeptical of superhero movies. We started out strong with the Spiderman and X-Men movies, but I feel like the quality of these films is dropping constantly. Am I alone?
Posted by Rian on June 7th, 2007You’re not alone, and with most of the big franchises closing in on #3 (and so many people being disappointed with Spider-Man 3), it does make me think this might be the beginning of the end for a while. The thing is, the movies are still making a ton of money, so in order for the trend to die out we’ll need to see a few comic book movies bomb horribly.
