Live Action Thundercats Movie On The Way

Well it was bound to happen eventually. Amidst all the studio scrambling to secure more 80’s cartoon properties like Transformers, it appears that Warner Brothers have optioned a script for a Thundercats live action feature film. Thundercats, you may remember, told the exploits of a group of feline humanoids forced to leave their planet Thundera, who crash land on a place called Third Earth where they clash with a mystical demonic priest named Mumm-Ra: The Ever Living and his cronies. The script was written by a guy named Paul Sopocy, and it will play out as an origin story with a focus on the young character of Lion-O and his coming of age.

Although this cartoon was a part of my childhood that I have fond memories of, I’m not sure this is something I want to see on the big screen. I mean, how the hell they can possibly pull this off without it looking ridiculous? Maybe if it was a CGI film like TMNT it could work, but as a live action movie I think they’re setting themselves up for a real cheesefest. Then again, if they can do a live action Hellboy movie, then maybe they can do Thundercats as well. Which brings me to my next point… who do you think should direct? Guillermo del Toro anyone???

  1. Whatever happened to Steven Spielberg directing kids movies? I think he should get in on some of this action.

  2. I can’t wait to see the new Care Bears movie, the live action Captain Caveman, Michael Bay’s My Little Ponies, The Blue Man Group in the Smurfs Feature Film. Not to mention when they start getting to the video games we grew up on, like a new Super Mario movie with James Gandolfini and Zelda with Heath Ledger.

  3. Can you imagine though, a Super Mario remake starring Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn?

  4. Let me preface this comment by saying that I have never seen an episode of Thundercats in my life (which probably discredits everything I’m about to say).

First, I don’t think that Hellboy and Thundercats makes a good comparison. In an attempt not to waste time or sound like a complete nerd, I won’t go into why I feel this way. However, suffice to say that if the Hellboy film was more like the Hellboy comic, I’m pretty sure nobody would make this comparison.

Second, I recently heard of a new updated Thundercats cartoon that is in the works in which the main characters will be children in a rock band who can transform into heroes. I wonder if the film will take this approach as well.

  5. Yeah that Thundercats cartoon rumour was sometime last year… I haven’t heard anything since. I’d like to think that after everyone made fun of it around the web that maybe they reconsidered.

As for Hellboy, I was mainly just thinking of how they brought the characters to life without making it too cheesy.

  6. Fair enough. That Thundercats cartoon premise sounded more like it was geared towards kids than anything, but it seems like the problem with some of these properties being updated might be that the people who really want to see them are older now and grew up with them. Do you think that perhaps studios should start making more adult-oriented versions of some of these shows to make money off of the older fans?
