Kevin Smith Reveals New Sex Comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Well just when you thought that Kevin Smith was going to flip his career on its head and do something completely different for a change with his previously announced horror flick Red State, he has to go and back it up with more of the same old crap. He recently revealed a few tidbits about a new comedy that he will be shooting back to back with Red State. It is being described as a “bawdy sex comedy with heart” — and also with nudity (”But funny nudity, not gratuitous nudity!”). The flick is called Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and it is about two thirty-something slackers who come up with a great money-making scheme after their 15 year high school reunion: they’re going to get into the porn industry!

Well, I guess this is the kind of material that Smith probably works best with, but already I can hear the masses asking, “Will Jay and Silent Bob make an appearance?”. In some ways it sounds like another retread of the Clerks movies, but if he is truly thinking of doing something in the vein of the 80’s sex comedies like Porky’s, then that could be interesting I suppose. The weird thing is, now when I hear about a story involving thirty-something slackers, I can’t help but think that I’d rather see Judd Apatow tackle it instead! What do you think, is Judd Apatow just a newer, hipper, funnier Kevin Smith?

  1. There are definitely similarities between the two. People are all over Judd Apatow at the moment because they feel like they can somehow relate to his characters. He certainly is very ‘hip’ and modern, like Kevin Smith was back in the day when he referenced the Death Star. Some people (fewer every day) still seem to think that Clerks is somehow a poignant movie just as they somehow perceive 40 year old virgin to be realistic.

The plot of this movie remnds me of Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion which was a kickass piece of trash. I doubt Kevin Smith will live up to that though, I think his style and abilities are pretty well established at this point. It could be funny if he cast Ben Affleck to reprise his Mallrats part for an anal scene, but other than that I’m not really excited.

  2. Whether or not Virgin is realistic, Apatow’s characters certainly exist in a more realistic and relatable universe than those of Smith’s. And when it comes to dialogue with heart and charm instead of laughs, Apatow is a bit more successful delivering believable emotion instead of stilted, forced line readings.

  3. I personally wouldn’t relate Apatow to Smith. On a base level they may make the same types of movies, but I think that their styles are a bit too different to say that Apatow is becoming the new Smith.

As far as this movie goes, I feel like I’ve heard this premise before (or at least something similar). Of course all I know about Smith’s concept is what I’ve read here, but these films come to mind:
