The Farrelly Brothers’ The Heartbreak Kid Trailer Starring Ben Stiller

When There’s Something About Mary first hit theatres in 1998, I remember seeing it and hearing everyone around me completely lose their minds. It may still be the craziest reaction to a comedy I have ever personally experienced in the theatre, and not surprisingly, the movie ended up being a huge hit. I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it (laughter is contagious, after all) and although some of the jokes were a bit much, the movie was anchored by Ben Stiller who is great at playing the down and out loser. The success of Mary spawned a gross out comedy craze, and made The Farrelly Brothers into huge stars (well, okay, Dumb & Dumber was pretty popular too, but it did star Jim Carrey). Since then I haven’t been impressed with anything they’ve done.

Now they’re reteaming with Ben Stiller again for The Heartbreak Kid, and his presence immediately makes the movie a lot more palatable. This time around he plays a guy who has trouble committing to relationships, and after watching all his friends get hitched, a girl comes along who appears to be the woman of his dreams. They quickly tie the knot, but as soon as the honeymoon hits, he realizes that she isn’t as perfect as he thought she was. In a lot of ways the movie looks pretty typical, but I have to admit that the trailer made me chuckle a few times. The Heartbreak Kid hits theatres on October 5th; check out the trailer over at Yahoo! now and see if it tickles your funny bone.

  1. i have a love hate relationship with the Farrelly’s… i can still enjoy TSAMary to some degree, though i dont own it. I bought Dumb and Dumber from the grocery store 4.99 bin for nostalgia purposes, and actually of their movies the one i actually watch over and over is Kingpin for some reason. could be the Bill Murray factor there.

i didnt hate Stuck on You, and even Shallow Hal was watchable, but I couldnt defend them. People forget their involvement in Osmosis Jones which was okay.

but yeah, theyre kinda coasting off their earlier movies’ successes still, and i actually didnt mind this trailer. Ben Stiller is someone i dont find FUNNY funny, but he’s a kind of straightman ‘funny enough’ thats a good ground for a movie like this to build a wacky cast around, and this one seems like it has the chance to at least be better than anything else they’ve done this decade.

  2. I read the synopsis for this film a while ago and was uninterested, but seeing Ben Stiller in action adds another level to it the concept that it didn’t have on paper. I doubt I’ll see it in theaters, but I’ll be looking forward to this.

  3. Trailer looks great. My wife and I just freaked out because about 1 minute into the trailer we noticed the same band we were amazed by while on the Hawaiian Island of Maui, years ago. The fastest 2 electric ukulele players I’ve ever seen. The band is called Kanekoa, Peter Farrelly saw them play in LA and had the same reaction we did. They can be found on MySpace, iTunes, and YouTube. The movie looks great and is sure to launch this band to the world…
