Sweet Ride: First Look at Speed Racer’s Mach 5

I have to admit, thus far I haven’t been feeling The Wachowski Brothers’ feature film adaptation of Speed Racer. Maybe it’s because I was never really into the TV show, but I can’t see this being anything other than goofy, and I have my doubts about whether or not The Wachowskis are cut out for material outside of The Matrix trilogy (yeah, I know, V For Vendetta was mostly their baby, and it was good so maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about). I gotta say though, this exclusive photo of the Mach 5 car that USA Today managed to land is one sweet ride! If the whole movie has this kind of kitschy retro future feel, then it could be pretty awesome. I was assuming they would go with a modern high-tech look, but that car pretty much kicks ass. Speed Racer stars Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci and Matthew Fox, and yes, a real monkey. The movie starts filming next week, but won’t hit theatres until May 9, 2008.

  1. I want to be excited. I love the Wachowski Brothers. I just don’t see what they see, as far as making Speed Racer a movie. A trailer will hopefully change my mind.

  2. I’ve never seen an episode of Speed Racer in my life, but John Goodman as Pops and Matthew Fox as Racer X are reason enough for me to see it. Also, I’m excited to see the first film directed by the Wachowskis since The Matrix trilogy.

  3. I’m very interested in what’s going on with this movie, as I wrote an outline for Speed Racer to come to the big screen in 1992 and was pitching it around to see if it peeked any interest. I was a radio/television production college student in San Diego then, and I’m wondering if someone picked up my idea.

  4. By the way, Speed Racer’s Mach 5 can be seen at the Peterson Car Museum in Los Angeles, CA, and it’s very similar (if not the same) to the one pictured here.
