Todd McFarlane to Shell Out for Spawn 2

A lot of people blame Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin for temporarily killing comic book movies back in the late 90’s, but I am reminded of another terrible comic book flick from the same year that certainly didn’t help matters: Spawn. Todd McFarlane’s dark and violent comic series was huge throughout the 90’s, and I remember everyone thought that the Spawn movie would completely kick ass. Unfortunately, it did not. Some would say it was a victim to poor early CG effects, while others would say the acting was terrible… personally I just think it was an all-around mess. Since then the popularity of the comic has cooled to an extent, but Todd McFarlane has never been one to accept defeat. In a recent interview with Home Media Magazine he announced his plans to make another Spawn movie, and this time around, he’ll be paying out of his own pocket. It also looks like the movie will be a “reboot” of sorts, as the script (being written by McFarlane himself obviously) will have no connection to the previous film. McFarlane also promises that the movie will be darker and creepier, and describes it as “a spooky, suspenseful thriller that will scare the crap out of you”. I respect Todd McFarlane as a very successful businessman, but he also has a pretty huge ego and I have to wonder if this is something that he wants and no one else does. At any rate, he’s got more than enough money at his disposal, so I suppose if he wants bad enough, one way or another we’re going to get it!

  1. Todd McFarlane has been saying that there’s a new Spawn movie coming for years now. I’m not entirely sure we’re any closer to a Spawn 2 than we ever have been in the past. As far as the desire for a new Spawn movie? I just spent the last three years attending the Joe Kubert school, which is essentially a boot camp for comic book artists. The approximately 100-150 students at the school are some of the biggest comic book nerds on the planet, yet I can’t think of a single one who reads Spawn. It was a big deal in the early to mid nineties because Todd McFarlane used to be a big deal himself. However, he hasn’t drawn a comic in about a decade, and fewer people than ever really seem to give a damn about Spawn. He sells lots of action figures, but none of the comic stores I find myself in on a week to week basis keep the comic on the shelves. Sure there are some die hard fans out there, but I just don’t see the need for another movie.

  2. that camp must suck then spawn is an amazing comic 1997 when the movie came out it wasnt the best movie in the world but it was damn good the movies will be here and todd will make history with SPAWN 2

  3. Hey i honestly thought that spawn wus a pretty good movie…it wusnt the best movie in the world but it wus pretty kool…well anyways I really think they should make a spawn 2 it will bring the spawn comic franchise back…especially with all the effects nd actors we have now a days

  4. SPAWN kicked ass. Ill admit it wasnt the best movie to most people but its a good movie to me. Spawn is my favorite hero/villain ever. Not only cause hes the only hero/villain i know but because his story is so tragic but awesome at the same time. I Love spawn because hes different from all the other superheros and villains out there in comics movies watever. Hes unique and its awesome. Plus if the first one sucked so bad then let the first one be somethin for him to learn from. Todd McFarlane is a smart man, he will probably fix wat was wrong and make it better than ever.
