Adam Sandler’s Gay Robot To Get Animated
Back in the good ol’ days, if a TV pilot didn’t get picked up by a network, or if a new series was cancelled, there was no way to tell if the show could have been a hit. You just had to cut your losses and move on. But nowadays, the internet is changing all that. Pilots for aborted projects like Global Frequency and the live action Aquaman series Mercy Reef managed to find an audience online, causing network execs to rethink their position on the shows. Of course, neither of them ended up getting reinstated in the end, but here’s an example of a show that seems to have found new life thanks to the internet. Back in 2005 Adam Sandler and his production company Happy Madison created a live action pilot for Comedy Central called Gay Robot. It was based on a sketch he did on his comedy album Shh… Don’t Tell, and it revolved around, quite literally a robot who discovers his sexuality after wine cooler gets spilled on his circuit boards. The pilot was never picked up, but after releasing a handful of clips on a MySpace page, the show has gotten a lot of buzz online. Now it looks like it may get resurrected as an animated series. I have to admit, watching some of the clips from the live action show, it’s so ridiculous that it actually works. I’m not sure the concept is strong enough for a full-blown series, however, and making it animated somehow makes the show much less interesting in my opinion. Still, when a homosexual automaton gains 32,000 friends on MySpace… how can you say no?

This is only sort of on topic: Global Frequency is a great concept and is perfect for television. Each issue of the book is a self-contained story focusing on a different person. Of course the pilot was very WB-friendly and as such the plot (based on the first issue of the comic) was very dumbed down. Give it a slightly bigger budget a few more talented writers, directors, and or actors, and a spot on a channel like ABC or Fox, and you’ve got a winner…in my opinion, of course.
